Animals in Art Week
Dogs and foxes and wolves, oh my! Members of the Canidae family are extremely popular with artists of all ages. Sometimes, though, it can be tricky to make your drawing look like a particular species.
It's a common struggle for beginners, and I've certainly given my fair share of canine creatures an identity crisis! If you have to tell people whether it's a dog or a fox, your character's reference art could probably use a little fine-tuning.
Many canine types are related enough to interbreed, but that doesn't mean they're all the same! Let's take a quick look at a few of the features that make them look distinct:
Wolf

First off, these are very big boys! As the largest canine species (although a few dog breeds rival them in size), wolves have long legs and a narrow chest. Unless they are a warm climate subspecies, wolves also have a very thick coat and bushy tail that make them look even bigger. A 'mane' of extra fur around their neck helps protect them from fights or rowdy packmates.
When you're drawing a wolf, you can use a sort of trapezoid shape for the muzzle (it's very long, to hold big teeth!). The face shape is generally round with winter-coat fluff filling out the cheeks. Wolf eyes are usually pale or yellow, and the dark 'eyeliner' edges give them a wild look. Don't forget the fluff inside the ears!
If you're stylizing your drawing, not making the eyes and ears too big might help you keep the 'big and wild' look of a wolf—big eyes and ears tend to suggest 'puppy' or 'small animal.'
Coyote

As far as appearance goes, you can kind of think of these guys as an 'in between' of wolves and foxes—their features are smaller and finer than wolves', but more wolf-shaped than foxes'. They tend to be a sort of tan color, and may have large ears (especially if they live in a hot climate).
Some other species of canines, such as jackals, may appear very similar to coyotes. Coyotes have a bushy tail that's not quite as fluffy as a fox tail.
Dog

Some of the dogs closest in appearance to wolves are huskies and malamutes. These dog breeds are smaller, often have smaller muzzles, have a wider chest, and typically sport more dramatic markings than wolves. The main features that give them a 'wolfish' look are the thick coat, face shape, and 'eyeliner' markings.

**Note that these are huge generalizations! Dogs come in many varieties.
Dogs tend to have a bigger, more pronounced stop than other canines (the facet of the face where nose bridge meets forehead). Often their muzzles are shorter, rounder, and/or thicker than their wild cousins', sometimes with extra jowls or 'softness'. Dogs usually have those big, round, wide-set 'puppydog eyes' that we love so much! (Eyes are black, brown, blue, or occasionally amber.) Floppy ears and curly tails are dog-only traits not found in the wild.
Due to human selection, dog coat lengths, body proportions, colors, etc. have a huge variety compared to wild canines. Without human involvement, dogs tend toward a more standard, utilitarian appearance and size (think dingoes, 'street dogs'). As a result, any dramatic or exaggerated body proportions (such as greyhounds, chihuahuas, pitbulls) will always read as 'domestic dog' rather than 'wild.' Typically, dogs have a proportionally wider chest than other canines.
Fox

Foxes are in the same family as dogs and wolves, but less closely related—they cannot crossbreed with other canine types. Foxes are built smaller and narrower than most other canines, with slender legs and their 'signature' bushy tail. Small, fluffy foxes may even appear catlike at first glance.
Use lots of triangle-y shapes to draw the slim little muzzle and sort of angular cheek tufts. Proportionally large ears (arctic fox has smallest, fennec fox has largest) sit at a perked-up angle on the head. To complete the cunning fox look, don't forget the almond shape of the eyes.
Hyena

Hyenas are technically not classified as a canine, but they get an honorary mention for their doglike appearance!
Hyenas' most distinctive features are a rounded muzzle, upright round ears, and an oddly-shaped body. These guys have round, heavy shapes for their hard noggins, strong jaws, thick necks, and sloped body. Don't make the muzzle too narrow or delicate! Hyenas use them to crunch through bones. Note that the nose is different from canine noses, and the neck has a sticky-up mane on it.
Hyenas have pronounced angle to their neck/chest area, and a sloped back. Their paws look a bit chunky compared to a lot of canines.
