Auction Entry for Halloween Jubilee Import #30

STORY

“Thank you so much,” Lauren shook the tall bearded man’s hand, Kayla pulled up the thick navy vest tighter around her shoulders, it was freezing.

“My pleasure, Mrs Silverwater,” The man smiled his light blue eyes had a cheerful twinkle, “I’m sure these two will find a lovely home with your family,” He gestured heartedly to the horse truck, its engine rumbling in the stillness of the dusk air, burping thick wraths of vapor into the cold Ukrainian air. The two Ukrainian Riding Horses would be departing for the airport soon where they would be flown back to Australia

“They sure will,” Kayla responded rubbing her elbows with her hands in an attempt to ward off the cold. She and her mother had flown over to Ukraine to look at a pair of Ukrainian riding horses, they had been generously offered the chance thanks to the URH registry sponsoring the 2023 Beltane Show. Kayla and her mother Lauren had set their eyes on a gorgeous pair  ( URH Import 35 & URH Import 36) and had just finalized the horse's transportation via air to Australia.

Lauren and the man began discussing acclimatizing the horses to the warmer Australian weather when Kayla heard movement behind her, she peered over her shoulder, the tall dark wooded tree trunks of a small wood were shrouded with mist and fog. The horse stud had set out pumpkins lining their drive and the jack o’ lanterns warm glowing eyes gave the fog an eerie glow.

Kayla jumped as leaves crinkled and a twig snapped, the silhouette of something was moving amongst the fog. Kayla ventured the few steps into the pumpkin patch her skin prickling nervously as the silhouette froze, as Kaylas eyes adjusted she could make out the shape of a horse, a small horse, a foal? What is a foal doing out here? Kayla moved closer the foal stood still his head lifted and ears pricked as Kayla approached, the foal was the most unusual colour Kayla had seen, a Chestnut and black chimera, the black dusting from its muzzle to its eyes making it look very similar to the unlit Jack o’ lanterns around it.

“Aren’t you a spooky one,” Kayla said softly as she got closer, the foal started nervously trotting a few steps away, kneeling down she made herself smaller, “Hey little one,” The foal looked at her for a few moments and took a few tentative steps forward its head lowering and its nostrils flaring with wary curiosity, Kayla slowly extended a hand and rested it on the foals patchy neck, it tensed under her touch but it didn’t shy away.

“What are you doing out here by yourself?” she said stroking it softly, the foal just gazed at her with its strange black-striped eyes. The foal suddenly tensed its head lifting up sharply.

“Kayla what are you-” Laurens's voice called and abruptly stopped, “What’s a little filly doing out here?” Kayla glanced over her shoulder to see the stable manager walking forward to stand beside Lauren.

“Here take this,” the man passed Kayla a lead rope, “Just slowly wrap it around her neck,” Kayla nodded and eased forward on her knees, the foal snorted and took a few steps back, ever so gently Kayla wrapped the lead rope over the foals neck.

“Got her,” Kayla let out a breathy sigh, she hadn’t realized she was holding her breath.

“Someone finally caught her,” the man smiled.

“Finally?” Lauren glanced at him curiously.

“Yeah, the little filly has been hovering around the woods here, I’m not certain where she came from, she just comes and goes as she pleases, we call her the Forest Wisp,” he said rubbing his chin thoughtfully, “Skittish little thing, I’m surprised you caught her,”

“Well, one thing is for certain. She can’t continue wandering around, the highway is just over that way, she could be hit,” Lauren said worriedly as both of them stepped forward to pat the filly.

“Hmm, she seems healthy enough, shes eaten pretty well,” the stable manager ran his hand along her rump and flanks, the filly startled and skirted backward Kayla lead the lead fall slack and followed the movement.

“Hey, easy, easy,” She said as the foal snorted, “Good, Wisp,” she soothed as the foal stilled letting her hand run gently down the foal's narrow face.

“She’s got spirit that’s for sure,” Lauren smiled.

“The best ones have spirit,” The stable hand smiled, he looked between Kayla and the filly frowning slightly, “What do we do with her,” he sighed worriedly, “we don’t have any foster mothers available at the moment,”

“We could take her?” Kayla jumped and glanced in surprise as Lauren spoke quietly.

“Well, that sounds like a good idea, she seems to like Kayla” He replied thoughtfully.

“It could work, we do have a broodmare back at home,” Lauren mused thoughtfully, looking at Kayla, “What do you think?”

“Oh may I?” Kayla smiled delightedly, she looked hopefully at the bearded stable manager, her breath pluming in the air as she waited for his reply.
