Angel leaned nervously against the pale blue wall, observing the piles of boxes around her. It was a nice room, clean and well-kept with shiny white and black tile that reminded her of a kitchen floor.
"Angel?"
A voice inquired suddenly from her left.
"Yeah?"
"Hi! My name is Diana! I'm the owner of Fox Hill Farms!"
"Oh, hi."
The woman who had spoken was tall and lean with copper hair and kindly brown eyes. She stood with a relaxed but authoritative demeanor, causing Angel to automatically stand straighter, as if at attention. There was something about this woman that demanded that.
"Will you follow me please? We'll just go into my office."
The blonde girl nodded and was led into a small room with forrest green walls and a gigantic mahogany desk.
"Hey, what are all the boxes for?" Angel asked suddenly as she bumped into one with her toe.
"Oh! We're moving to a new facility in a few weeks. Gotta expand the program!"
"Oh."
Silence settled over the room for a moment before Diana spoke saying,
"Please, sit down, make yourself at home!", while indicating a black plastic chair that sat on the side of the desk nearest to the door.
"Sure..." Angel responded, nervously sitting where she had been told to. Meanwhile, Diana had taken a seat opposite her in a plush black chair with legs covered in bubble wrap.
"Alright, Angel, shall we begin?"
"Sure."
"Wonderful! So, how old are you?"
"Twenty-two."
"And how long have you been working with horses?"
"Forever, I guess. I got a job at a track near my house when I was fourteen. Started working as a groom and exercise rider when I was fifteen, and I've been riding races since I was sixteen."
"Do you have any formal jockey schooling?"
"No. I don't need any."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because I've been doing it long enough that they wouldn't have anything to teach me. I've been supporting myself financially with riding since I was eighteen. If I can do that, then I'm sure that I'm a qualified rider."
Diana raised an eyebrow skeptically but kept going with the questions.
"Is there a certain type of horse that you find yourself to be best at riding?"
"The crazy ones."
"Why?"
"They just wanna run away from their problems. So do I. Can we move on?"
"Uh, sure..."
The owner riffled through her notes, asking several more questions, mostly having to do with the young woman's experience as a jockey. She certainly seemed experienced, but her egotistical attitude was not something that Diana usually would have embraced. Then again, it was clear that Angel was in desperate need of some help. Perhaps Fox Hill was the perfect place for her to be.
"So Angel, I have this cute little filly who has, lets say, a bit of a temper problem."
"Oh yeah? How old?"
"Only a foal. I just won her at an auction yesterday. I'm looking or someone with experience who I can trust to bring her along. She has the potential to be great."
Angel sat in silence, waiting for Diana to go on. Finally, when neither one spoke, she asked, "So does this mean you're hiring me?"
"I don't know. Maybe."
"Maybe? What kind of an answer is that?"
Diana glared at the girl, lost in thought. Of everybody she had interviewed, Angel was clearly the brightest and the most skilled. But could she respect Diana and the Fox Hill staff?
Finally, the owner spoke, her voice filled with warning and welcome.
"I like you Angel, but I'm afraid that if you keep this attitude up, we aren't going to get along. We need to be able to communicate without sarcasm and with complete honesty. Can you do that?"
"When I got a job to do, I know how to do it."
"Fine then, meet me here tomorrow at 6 AM."
"Why?"
"We're going to go pick up the filly. I want you to be with."
Angel nodded, determination staining her face.
"Thanks Diana, I won't let you down."
"No Angel, I don't think you will."
