I save pretty much every doodle and unfinished drawing for this exact reason. The original drawing in the top right hand corner was drawn many years ago, more than likely while I should have been paying attention in class. At some point I was digging through my scraps when I found the drawing, the aesthetic quality of the mask had always appealed to my surrealist sensibility and I had wanted to resurrect the nameless character for some time, and on 8-3-2005 I did just that.

#2 led and my finger for smudging, can't say whether the pencil was wood or mechanical however, nor can I say how much time it actually took me.

You might notice that the character in the original drawing was more of a jester/wizard type, while the update made him into more of a knight. I still find this interesting, as it wasn't preplanned. In general I never plan my drawings ahead of time, I usually just put the pen/pencil to the paper and let the image take shape on its own.
