Description
IMPORTANT NOTE: The purpose of this deviation was to take Siontix Realm characters from present day and try to design them as if they were coming from the '1st Gen.' style era--or 'Seppuku Era' of 2012-2013. This indeed means that the challenge here was to intentionally draw low quality artwork as a sort of "What if EngelReise and Shrouded Piety were stories being written in 2013?" To accomplish this, I spent a great deal of time examining 1st Gen. artwork from 2013 mostly to try and understand the tendencies and styles of this past era, hence in a strange way my claim of 'reverse engineering.'What I found during my studies is that 1st Gen. drawings could best be described as having:
- Absolutely no shading
- A lot of pixels
- Inconsistent lines due to unprofessional resizing (see Suri's head)
- Simple hair
- Sharper/more dangerous hair
- Improper color filling
- Very weird poses (see Suri)
- Claw-like or circular hands
- Circular breasts
- Bad feet/legs
- Arms often planted to the waist or arms crossed
That said, this is my best try at showing what characters from EngelReise and Shrouded Piety might have looked like had the stories been running in 2013 when 1st Gen. was the current style of the time. For the extra sense of authenticity, I even did these on Paint.NET.
I plan to do more of these in the future but for now will hold myself to just the '-tagonists' of ER/SP.
Tomako Angel: Now the oldest of Siontix Realm members might be thinking, "Isn't this cheating? The concept drawing for Tomako Angel was in 1st Gen. style." This is true, however, keep in mind that Tomako's old concept drawing looks very different than what she would go on to become. The concept drawing featured her with a large hat, a scarf, a pale brown shirt, some leather hide pants, different hair, different eyes, and not even a purple sword. Therefore, this attempt shows what Tomako Angel might have looked like in 2013 with her canon and therefore final appearance.
With Tomako, I chose to give her this style of eye as this was how in 2013 and slightly onward I believed Asian eyes should look. I would describe this old Asian eye style as just being an arch with only half its full height. Funnily enough I think this may be the best of the four drawings in that it doesn't really offend the eye too badly. The big offender though would be her sword, EngelReise, which I know for a fact would be a dull purple appearance (in fact I know this is the case because there exists drawing of Tomako with a generic purple sword.) The worst part of this is that in 2013 I had a very bad sense of perspective, so I know her sword would've been sticking far out her back like so in a hilariously inconvenient way.
All in all, I think Tomako is my favorite of these four in the sense that I'm quite confident she would have been one of the better faces of the 1st Gen. era, if EngelReise existed back then in its present state.
Kim Young: So Kim is an interesting case because his concept design comes from that sweet difficult period where I'm just starting a new Gen. Style. That is, Kim Young's first appearance came right at the start of 2nd Gen. and therefore still had some elements of 1st Gen. This drawing then of course would show us what Kim might have looked like had we designed him a few months earlier. Unlike Tomako though, Kim has not changed all that much since his conception.
The big thing about a 1st Gen. Kim is that his hair would never have had a left and right side like it does in present day, it would have just been completely unified as pictured here. It's actually the back of his hair that would be most interesting as I'm quite certain the back of his head would've looked hilariously similar to what Suri Yaktosh has today. There's not really that much more to say for Kim though other than that I'm quite certain he would have many times been crossing his arms, as this was something that was almost unique to only male characters in the 1st Gen. era.
In Kim's picture, I did give him some inconsistent legs to represent the very common occurrence of the day where characters had legs of unequal size.
Suri Yaktosh: Her design came from the very end of the 2nd Gen. era, a short time before 3rd Gen. would take over. This is therefore where it gets a little tricky since we're taking a borderline 3rd Gen. character and reducing her to 1st Gen.
For 1st Gen. Suri, I felt very strongly that she would have the same sort of hair that Earl Bendek had throughout the 1st Gen. era, hence my decision to pretty much just give Suri vanilla Earl hair. The difference of course is the spiky hair in the back I gave her. 1st Gen. had a lot of instances where hanging hair was all spiked up and dangerous looking, so I know for a fact Suri's hair in the back would be all thorny looking compared to her present day thicker look. I did not draw collarbones back then hence my decision to completely disregard it. Breasts used to be my nemesis when it came to drawing as many old school Siontix Realm members would know. Back in 1st Gen. was the legendary era of 'circular boobs' where breasts 50-60% of the time were just circles like so. Whether breasts came out as pure circles or more in the style of a comic sans 'w' always depended on my patience and so often I would take the easy way out of just doing two pushed together circles, top parts erased. Even MORE common than that though were the lobster hands seen in just about every single Part 1/3 Seppuku drawing you can imagine. Sometimes it was less noticeable (Suri's left hand) but then other times it was just ridiculous (Suri's right hand.) Lastly, I depicted Suri with one of these classic/confusing poses as I would often save such poses for excitement. As Suri is an easily excitable character, I strongly believe you would have seen her making strange poses like this more than once if she were around for 1st Gen.
Fun fact: It would have been even harder for people to notice that Suri doesn't have eyebrows in 1st Gen. as about 50% of the time characters didn't have eyebrows in the 1st Gen. style. That said, there may very well still be more drawings of Chiya out there without eyebrows than there are of Suri.
Selina Osiris: Selina, of these four, would be the hardest to deform into 1st Gen. since her concept design came all the way in 4th Gen. Since by birth Selina is a 4th Gen. character, it's all up to studying past 1st Gen. drawings to determine what she would look like in 2013.
First of all, important thing to note is that I never colored eyebrows in the 1st Gen. style. Never. No matter how thick of brows, they would always be pure black. That said, a 1st Gen. Selina is the only time we would ever see her with black eyebrows. Since Selina is respectively one of the Siontix edgelords, like Lt. Seppuku and other characters of his nature, she would often have a static face of annoyance, not impressed, angry... The eyes she has is actually completely new, so I certainly can't state for true that those are the eyes a 1st Gen. Selina would have, but I feel they would be very close as I liked to give foreign characters different eyes in that era. Selina's hair at first glance might not look that different but compare the two versions of her in this image and you'll notice there's actually a few things out of place. Firstly, I did not do bangs in the style we see today, 1st Gen. bangs were all unified as if wearing a helmet or bowl on the head. Secondly, I almost never had hair on the sides, therefore Selina would not have had that hair going down her cheek. It could be assumed Selina's hair is also shorter in 1st Gen. even if we can't see. The scythes on her collar are drawn on with very little effort, a very, very common style in 1st Gen. due to the smaller resolution I used and the small brushes I worked with. This is also because in the 1st Gen. era I went by a "Small details needn't be worked on for too long" mentality. Most importantly, you'll notice that you can hardly even see the lines making up her breasts, separating her legs, arms, etc. This was a common occurrence especially for a character like Lt. Seppuku or Dark Rose who wore purely black. Lastly, you will notice that some lines can be somewhat seen through--this was, perhaps, one of the most defining parts of 1st Gen. Not taking care of simple messes like this when all I had to do was fill this in black in a child layer.

Oh man, seeing them in this style...highlights a lot of things we have seen through the long years of the Siontix Realm.
Especially Suri! Look at that foot!
What a throwback to 2013! This was easily something you have every right to say, "I really did come far." Making this, I think you were tempted to do a lot of things that modern Siontix would do. But you overcame in the end!
