The woman above is Harriet Tubman, perhaps one of the most remarkable characters in US history. Born into slavery, Harriet escaped only to return on no less than 19 daring expeditions to free her family and friends from their shackles, at the risk of her own death or enslavement. When the civil war started Tubman became a spy for the Union, Using her contacts in the upper south plantations to bring back information about the confederate war effort and rescue more slaves. On one occasion she even commanded Union troops, leading them on a raid to liberate 700 slaves from key southern plantations. She later retired to upstate New York to look after the family she had brought back together and to take an active role in the emerging Women’s rights movement.

During her many travels as a outlaw Tubman went unrecognised by turning white ignorance against hem , talking her way out of trouble when needed to . besides , what kind of a black woman could be a spy?
