Sailuk peeked around the bush he was hiding behind timidly. He took a deep breath and thanked Aputi wordlessly for showing him the benefit of bush lurking when hunting tokota locations, as that was exactly how he tracked these men down. It was now night, though Frosty was stolen in the afternoon and in broad daylight not far away from his side. It was just a simple trip to the market. They were right outside the entrance of the nearest town. Frostys startled yelping still rang in his ears from when a pack of large wolfhounds muscled her away from Sailuk’s side and two hooded figures literally lassoed her into the depths of the woods.
Sailuk initially had panicked. He had only ever had an anxiety or panic attack three times in his life, and he nearly had a fourth in the middle of the road after Frosty, his Frosty, was stolen. But the desperation was what sent him into overdrive. He took the tracking training he had from his job in Black Pines and put it to use to track the thieves through the forest. By the time he caught up to them, having stayed back a little to keep the dogs from smelling him, the sun was setting and he chose to wait even longer in the bushes by what he assumed was their shoddy hide out.
It was a wooden shack of sorts with lights shining through all the windows and cracked open door. Earlier, when he watched Frosty’s tail disappear inside the doorway, he had heard all kinds of yipping and crying that he had come to recognize as Tokotas thanks to living with the Tribe. The word “Poachers” clicked in his mind and his eyes searched the sleds sloppily parked along the side of the building. And something else clicked as his eyes settled on a symbol on the side of the sled.
Black Pine Poachers.
Hands suddenly sweaty as he realized these men may be people he knew from back home, he ducked back into the hideout he created. Sailuk breathed as deeply as he possibly could, trying to prepare himself for his first ever breaking and entering. He never was this reckless, but he needed Frosty back. The man dug into his bag and took out one of his caribou whistles, struggling to wet his lips so he could use it. He needed to lure the poachers out, and he hoped the threat of an angry hooved creature would do the trick.
It worked a little too well. As soon as the call stopped the hunting dogs bolted out the door followed by the poachers. Sailuk almost swallowed the whistle as he realized the dogs were bred to hunt and took off as quietly as he could for the back window. It was easy to push it open and jump in, and he gave a breathless thank you to every god watching out for him and allowing him to get inside unnoticed.
As soon as his feet landed a loud whimper and bark caught his attention. Frosty was wiggling excitedly in a cage much too small for her body and Sailuk hurried to her, hands going for the lock instantly. He noticed the rope still around her neck was staked into the soft wooden ground outside of the cage and after he noticed the stake realized just how bad the situation was. There were sick and weak tokotas shoved into cages, tokis and normal builds literally stacked against the walls. Some looked like they hadnt been fed in days. Sailuk was still afraid of tokotas, but even this broke his heart. He needed to help everyone else, but Frosty was his priority. He’d come back with the tribe later.
His heart jumped into his throat as he managed to undo the lock on Frosty’s cage and ushered her out, closing it as quietly as he could. But Frostys sudden snarling from behind him told him it was too late.
“What in the Hell!” the first voice echoed in the shack and Sailuk spun around, reaching for Frosty instinctivly. The second man saddled up beside the first and he made eye contact with Sailuk. The two of them instantly recognized the other.
“Well shit! Sailuk!” the second man smirked, knowing exactly who their little vigilante was. “You remember him right?” he jabbed his partner in the side. “He was Atshen’s bitch.”
Frosty could feel Sailuk’s fear double as he recognized the poachers and her fur lived up to its name, looking extremely sharp as it rose on her spine.
“I wonder what Atshen’s gonna say when we tell him you’re one of those assholes who treat these monsters like puppies!” the first man said as he pulled his rifle around to his front.
“I-I...J-Just let us go!” Sailuk stammered, moving closer to Frosty as he struggled to think of a way out. He couldnt leave her, so getting back out the window he came in was a no go. The two poachers laughed at his cracking voice and advanced, sending Frosty into a snapping fit unlike one Sailuk has ever seen. She literally bit into the rifle and ripped it from the poachers hands, snapping the strap around his shoulders. Frosty spit the cracked rifle out and looked at Sailuk, begging him to understand what she was asking.
Despite the rage in her eyes and Sailuks vision starting to blur from fear, the two knew what the other wanted for the first time ever since their partnership. She bowed slightly and Sailuk threw himself onto her back, attempting to straighten himself up like he had when he rode horses in Black Pine, and with her head down Frosty grabbed the stake in the ground and tore it out. Sailuk didnt have time to settle on her back before the Razor mane took off for the door, shoving her way through the two poachers who were stunned and screaming after them.
Sailuk looked back, letting out a panicked scream of his own. This was his first time riding Frosty, or any tokota for that matter, and it was while they were being shot at by poachers. But he couldnt help but feel a little bit of pride, in himself and in Frosty, as the barking and gun shots became echoes behind them.
