Short story bonus (credit Schainukan ):
Today's the day! The third and final rite to complete before Rowan and Callum receive their Arms of Akna.
Although all that trailing and scenting left the Toki still somewhat exhausted from their last rite since he did most of the work, he couldn't help being hyped for what's to come. The lilac male wiggled his behind in anticipation as he gazed over to his rite partner.
Callum however looked rather unimpressed and honestly irritated, it seemed the attitude of the little guy was getting to him, slowly but surely. They just didn't seem to mesh well, but you have to make do with what you get or so to bark.
"Alright, let's get this over with..." The red Dire muttered under his breath heaving himself onto his paws and started trotting, following the different scents leading toward the foliage. Row could barely contain his excitement as he rushed past Cal and straight ahead into the forest, casually stopping in his tracks to turn back to him and shaking his butt in a playful manner while his tongue lolled out of his maw before continuing onwards. Red Boy rolled his eyes and shook his head gently in disbelief at how one could still possess so much energy and sheer excitement. "Come on, hurry up! We'll miss out on any prey at this rate." Roo yelled eagerly. "You are right, with all your shouting we will definitely miss out on all the prey." Callum replied with a sigh.
The Toki seemed to take that obvious hint as he decided to decrease his speed and stayed quiet for a while, almost shy and embarrassed. It was oddly silent with all the noise Rowan was causing now gone and their walk through the woods beneath those tall trees almost appeared peaceful in a way despite the casual breeze rustling the surrounding leaves of the bushes.
It was until a distant rushing of a river could be heard, the sound increasing in loudness the further they approached it. They picked up their pace to reach their newfound destination and were met with a wooden building in the middle of the current - a beaver dam. The animal's scent lingered strongly in the air but at the same time it was fainter than expected, it seemed they hadn't returned to their home for a couple of hours at least, probably out and about. "Beaver must be looking for logs." The Toki noted, focused and the large fella nodded accordingly, "It seems so.". The Tokotas walked along, following the smell of the creature - it didn't take too long until they found their first traces. "A broad mark on the ground, the beaver's tail must have left that." Callum noticed, sniffing the place. "And look, wood chips!" Rowan added, pointing at his findings.
Suddenly the Dire's ears perked as a noise hit them, gnawing. "Shh, it's right around the corner." He said, gazing over at the moving bushes, gradually lumbering towards it. The Toki's interest was piqued and he couldn't help himself but race up towards the bushes and jump head-first into them as they kept shaking. The beaver released a deep grumble and angry chitter at the two predators, showing their imposing teeth for a moment before trying to scurry away - Row following suit. Cal let out a snarl, 'That Dumb-', he thought annoyed before sprinting after them. The lilac was playfully pouncing it every now and then, panting and clearly having fun as he was grinning gleefully. "What the heck was THAT supposed to be?! Are we trying to catch the prey or just toy with it?" The red male was scoffing at him, upset which was unusual for him normally being rather calm and collected. The beaver changed directions as it tried to run away. "Alrighty, alrighty, I'm gonna catch it!" Roo retorted nipping at the animal's butt, his yaws snapping at the strands of fur. "What are you doing, you are driving it in the wrong direction!" Callum warned as he gave chase after the two - one of them an idiot about the be outsmarted by a prey animal.
It was then that the river rapidly drew close, "We are losing it, don't let it get back into the water!" Red Boy yelled. "I got i-" Rowan was cut short as all of a sudden he stumbled over his paws and tumbled face-first into the river while the beaver escaped. "So much as getting it..." The Dire remarked, panting heavily, obviously tired out. The Toki sat up, soaked as he tilted his head to one side and stuck out the tip of his tongue innocently, "Oops...". At a loss for words and too exhausted to argue he replied, "You are stupid.".
Thus their hunting attempt came to a close.
