#12: Umlaut - CarnEvil

Anyone remember this one? No..? Man, I may be moving from the ambiguously amoral to the legitimately psychotic here, but I'm still pretty stuck in the esoteric, forgotten pieces of media department, aren't I? Oh well, this is my personal list of favorite killer clowns, whether or not anyone remembers them is besides the point, though I'd imagine this one does strike up more memories then the last, if only as repressed childhood trauma, and honestly that's how this guy made the list in the first place. I almost didn't, in fact I had my lineup set and ready to go, but as I looked back over it, memories of a bygone era hit me like a ton of bricks-memories of something dark, lingering in my childhood... that being the infamous CarnEvil.

Kind of a relic these days, back in the 90's this was like a main stay at arcades, I swear every one had this arcade box in it. There you'd be, some innocent kid at some birthday event. Everything is all fun and games... until one wrong glance in the arcade turns your attention to this evil son of a bitch. It stood out like a sore thumb among the other arcade boxes, not even having the decency to be put off in a corner or anything and would promptly assault your senses with sick, macabre imagery that, if you were like me, would both perversely entice you and haunt your nightmares for days to come. (believe it or not, I used to be a very squeamish kid!)

Kind of a round about way of saying it, but for me, CarnEvil IS the essence of haunted carnival/evil clown scenarios if only because of how quintessential this was to the era in which I grew up, which I realize has made me sound extremely old in all of this but the point I'm trying to make is that while it nearly escaped me, I really couldn't have this line up without it as CarnEvil was my first ever introduction to this genre and despite it scaring me, or perhaps because it did, it intrigued me. This would be one of the very few entrees I've added over the years that actually effected me, so it earns a kind of special place. Now granted, I've never really played the game, nor do I claim to be any big fan of it, which is why I placed it so low on the list; I'm not gonna be a poser and act like it something of great note to me when I never even played it, but I do feel that it defines everything about this year's theme. All this said, it was a lot of fun to draw and looking into the gameplay for reference did make me wish there was some kind of console release or sequel to it, but that's neither here nor there~
