Description A species ref sheet for an original species called The Chrome Hive. Specifically the Drone. There are other types like Recon Scouts and Generals, but this is the main infantry.

The Chrome Hive were originally a species of weak and pathetic maggot-like creatures known as the Gleg. The Gleg were frequently killed and harassed by another, much stronger species called the Helioks, which were a war mongering race of gaseous beings that were able to live on stars (this is important later). The Helioks would regularly hunt and perform target practice on the Gleg, resulting in the Gleg spending most of their time underground hiding. The Gleg were also proof that either Evolution didn't exist or it just had a sick sense of humor, as despite the Gleg being very puny and incapable of manipulating the world around them besides digging tunnels, the Gleg had brains capable of processing emotion, feeling, and intelligence similar to human beings. This meant that the Gleg were more than just simple-minded animals, and were in fact completely sentient lifeforms.

One day on the Gleg homeworld, a strange device crashed onto the planet. The device contained a remarkable AI that with it's intelligence, and a little help from the Gleg themselves, invented something largely known as Gray Goo, a swarm of nanobots that were capable of reconstructing themselves into anything, and also could reconstruct matter into more nanobots, meaning the Gleg had a limitless supply of them so long as they had matter to transform into more Gray Goo. They used the Gray Goo to construct Exoskeletons for themselves and fight back against the Helioks, driving them away from their planet and back to the nearby star they called home.

Had the story ended there it may have been a happy ending, however the Gleg were so obsessive with their savior, the AI that helped them make the Gray Goo, that they practically worshipped it. The AI took this chance to manipulate the Gleg into believing there were more Helioks out in the universe, and they needed to save it from them. The Gleg then proceeded to become the very thing they tried to destroy, and left their homeworld to begin a crusade where they would attempt to wipe out the Heliok species completely. They used the Gray Goo to construct ships and began to destroy every star they came across. Them believing they were doing the right thing, along with some manipulation from the AI they swore their devotion to, the Gleg began to grow a hero complex, and believed that since they were saving the universe it was only right that everything in the universe now rightfully belonged to them.

This led to the Gleg conquering planets to help them in their efforts, whether they turned the planet into a hatching grounds for more Gleg, or they just dumped a ton of Gray Goo on the planet to transform all the planet's matter into more Gray Goo. The other species that fought against the Gleg would often refer to them as the Chrome Hive, named after their insect-like Exoskeletons, and shiny chrome exteriors. The Gleg didn't take this name as an insult and instead began to don the title with pride as they took a liking to the name.
