The title says it all: This one shows a scene right after Shadow was created and the first time he saw the Professor from inside that tube. ItΒ΄s supposed to be night-time, I tried my best to capture the atmosphere well. ItΒ΄s hand drawn and edited with Paint.NET, as always. Please comment!

The shading on this is just lovely. It's dark, but it's a soft darkness. And the level of detail is just right to make it seem real and alive without making it seem cluttered. I can't say if the subtle colors or the expressions do more; they meld into one. And you nail something distinct about Shadow's face without resorting to the constant scowl many give him. Most drawings on this theme picture Shadow grown, in full gear, and determined.
Small, without shoes and gloves, he looks much more naked and helpless... And he looks disoriented, truly like he's waking up for the first time and looking around to catch the surroundings. His gaze suggests he's already capable of some degree of analysis, it's more than just wide-eyed impression intake. But he still can't understand where he is, or the magnitude of what he's been made for. The protective bubble of the incubator doesn't make him look less exposed. The glimpse of black, star-pierced space behind him only adds to it.
And he doesn't know who or what he is, but Gerald knows. His placement in the picture and entire carriage makes him solid as rock, the one who knows what is going on. But outside of that, it's impossible to tell what he's thinking here, because of how his eyes don't show. It makes me wonder how he would have regarded Shadow; mainly as a person, or mainly as a project? He knows the risks and purposes of Shadow's creation and what he might have to do in life; how would he feel about that? Accomplished because through Shadow, he'd give the world a chance? Grief for someone who's created with his life task already staked out for him? Tenderness for a new life?
There are many more ways to interpret it, it changes every time I go back and look. And all those added dimensions make this special. The whole image is at once serene and loaded with anticipation. And a certain amount of inevitability; something that's been initiated and will roll on, no matter if it ends where you planned it. All of this is really subtle and difficult for me to pin down, which is what I really love about this piece.
