I had an idea once, after his death, Apocalypse struck a deal with the devil, Mephisto. Mephisto returns Apocalypse to the land of the living as long as he brings about the literal apocalypse in his name. From this point on, Apocalypse gains paranormal abilities and can imbue his horsemen with enhancements from hell.
