First Prompt for the Handler Training set!

1. First Meeting: Show the first impressions or first meeting between the Rukaan and their handler.

Things don’t go as planned between Jayke and Rowan.

Jayke awoke with a new kind of anxiety. Today was the day that he would tame his first rukaan. His family had been eyeing the local herds that often came close to his village, and they were determined that one herd in specific might yield some potential partners. He exhaled and took in a deep breath before slipping on his clothes and a light blue cloak cuffed with rabbit fur. As he exited his tent, the morning light shone brightly, making him cover his eyes with the shadow of his hands.

“Good to see that you are finally awake,” his mother walked by with a small load of firewood. “How are you feeling?”

”I'm nervous, “Jayke added, as he ran to the stable, slipping past another villager and almost knocking him over. “Sorry!” He laughed nervously.

”Are you joining us for breakfast?!” His mother yelled.

”Don’t count on me, I must get to the herd as soon as possible!” Jayke ran to the stable and grabbed a couple of carrots and apples. He bowed to a couple of the Rukaan that were in the stable. These were the same rukaan that he grew up with and had grown to respect the grace and the power of these special creatures. His heart pounded deep in his chest, reminding him of the anxiety from this morning.

He grabbed a halter and a couple other things, stuffing them into his satchel. Exiting the stable he began towards the meadows just a couple miles out of the forest. His village was nestled in the middle of the weeping forest, hidden from the outside world. The rukaan in this village are seen as brothers and sisters and have formed deep bonds with the elves that live there. Jayke had always felt close with his family's Rukaan but now that he could tame one of his own, he was incredibly excited.

His leather boots shone in the sun, now wet from the morning dew. He followed a well trodden path that many of the Ruk in his village have followed. Because of their deep bonds, many of the rukaan come and go as they please while others stay permanently in the village. Some enjoy both sides of being wild and tame, leaving in the fall and winter and staying in the spring and summer. Sometimes returning with a new fawn. He followed the path until it opened into a large meadow teeming with flowers and wildlife.

A small herd of rukaan glanced in his direction, a couple of them getting up from their lying position. Jayke recognized a couple of them as partners to his people. While some rukaan are respectful to elves, others can be aggressive. Jayke sighed and walked a bit closer and sat down, observing the herd, waiting for something to speak to him. “What do I do? Do I approach them, should I wait for them to approach me?” He silently cussed in his head, wishing he had asked his family for better advice. He finally decided on sitting for a bit and seeing what the herd might do.

After a while of sitting, Jayke became more relaxed and tired as the sun relentlessly lulled him to sleep. He quickly drifted off, enjoying the cool weather mixed with the warming hug of the sun and grass. After a couple of hours his eyes slipped open and he arose. He looked up and gasped slightly, seeing that he was now within the herd. He smiled and laughed to himself as a Ruk came close and gave him a nuzzle. “I must have dozed off,” He stroked its fur and looked into its eyes. “I'm not sure what I am doing, or who I am to see here. Do you know?” The Ruk only looked back at him and snorted.

Looking at the sun, Jayke got up and brushed his pants off. “I’d better start heading home before my family starts to worry.” He smiled and gave the Ruk a carrot from his bag. “Thank you for protecting me while I slept. Odin must be with me.” He quietly strode out of the herds borders and back towards his home. He sighed feeling a bit sad that he wasn’t able to make a connection. “I didn’t feel anything…” He muttered under his breath, then wondering if he was supposed to feel something. Everyone in his village had made it sound like he would know as a surety, and yet even after being immersed in the herd he hadn’t felt anything. Regardless, he wasn't going to give up so easily. “Maybe I will come back tom—“ His voice trailed as he almost ran smack into a large male Ruk. His ears filled with his heartbeat again.

The ruk snorted, obviously surprised by his sudden approach. Jayke watched him in awe, he was a deep red with darks and markings. His head was adorned with golden elk antlers. Jayke practically had to squint to see him fully in the sun. He looked like a king, but even Jayke could tell that he was young. Jayke bowed his head to show respect and reached into his back to grab an apple. The ruk only eyed him but didn’t retreat or approach, only moving back slightly when Jayke approached. He grunted and stomped a hoof, sending a warning that he wasn’t interested in whatever game he was playing. Jayke quickly retreated, and set the apple down on the ground. The ruk was wary but he took the apple nonetheless and looked back at Jayke. His mouth formed almost a sneer. “Does that mean that you liked it?” Jayke muttered, stumbling slightly over his words. The ruk pawed the ground and then walked past Jayke, it grunted and pushed him with his antlers.

Jayke grunted, just barely missing the sharp tines of his rack. He groaned as he hit the ground hard. “You’re not going to make it easy on me will you?” Jayke got up rubbing his butt. The ruk looked back, with the same frown which softened slightly. It slicked back into the meadow and rejoined the other rukaan. Jayke rubbed his head and pondered if that was the sign he was looking for. If it was, he had his work cut out for him. “I wonder what tomorrow will hold for us,” He laughed and turned back to head home.
