I think this look captures Smaug's personality well. He has the sort of stuck up and snooty air about him and though he may not look as dangerous or deadly as your other Smaug I really don't think he has to. Yes he's supposed to be "Smaug the magnificent" but honestly Bilbo was just trying to save his skin and use the dragon's ego to buy time. Β This Smaug looks old and tired, which would make sense seeing as he's been basically sleeping on gold for years doing next to nothing.Β
