Ringworld was terrific in its day; 'Golden Age' SF upgraded for the second half of the 20th century by the addition of supermaterials such as fibres with infinite heat conductivitiy, ridiculously strong monofilaments, guaranteed indestructible ship hulls, etc. Once the idea was out there there was no way some post Niven/Pournel author was not going to use it. We should be glad that it was Iain M. Banks, arguably the brightest star in the sophisticated, modern, wide-screen, Galaxy spanning SF firmament.
