I'm surprised no one as ever done this before, not even in fan art, in canon Knuckles is Guardian of the Master Emerald, yet Sonic is the one who is most in tone with the Chaos Emeralds, he understands them better than Knuckles, if Knuckles was to die Sonic would be the only character suitable to Guard the Master Emerald as he too would be able to communicate with it, probably better than Knuckles could as well.

This fan art put the pure, good natured Sonic as the Guardian of the Master Emerald, because he can communicate better with it, Sonic finds out about Tikal and Chaos much sooner, even going as far to release both of them and even revive Tikal with the Chaos Emeralds.

On the other hand, Knuckles is getting to be the hero with his best buddy Tails, and girlfriend Amy Rose, well Amy still predicted she'd meet Sonic, but when it was Knuckles who showed up and saved her from Metal Knuckles and Robotnik in Knuckles CD, she decided to give him a chance, oh Knuckles finds her annoying, but he let her join him and Tails on their adventures and as learnt to tolerate her.
