History:
Fair maidens in stories are usually depicted as submissive, fair and the epitome of goodness. That was true for Diao Chan aswell, at least in appearences. Gifted to the tyrannical warlord Dong Zhuo to be his concubine, Diao Chan instead manipulated Dong Zhuo's foster child, the great warrior Lu Bu, to fall in love with her, and later kill his foster father, while at the same time filling Dong Zhuo's ears with misstales about his son and his supposed "unwated advances" towards her.
She succeded in pitting one against the other, so one day when Dong Zhuo caught Lü Bu courting Diao Chan in his own backyard, he became so enraged that he ran after Lü Bu to kill him. In turn, Lü Bu would have ended Dong Zhuo's life, but he retreated instead. Some time later, they staged a coup d'etat and killed Dong Zhuo properly.
After Lü Bu's death, Cao Cao, another warlord who later established Wei, one of the Three Kingdoms, gave Diao Chan to Guan Yu, one of the two sworn brotherly generals of Cao Cao's rival Liu Bei, but he was unwilling to sabotage the cause of Liu Bei for whom she had great respect, so Guan Yu escorted her to a temple, where she became a nun. Hearing this, Cao Cao was enraged and ordered her captured. His men traced Diao Chan to the temple but, refusing to be brought back to Cao Cao, Diao Chan threw herself to the sword in the hand of one of the men and killed herself.
