Description
“All right everyone, I have one more announcement before we wrap up for the day,” Nezu said. The monthly staff meeting was almost over, and the teachers were eager to go home. But they watched their small principal hop up from his chair to open the door.Just a few moments later, you walked in. Most of the people present recognized you instantly. You were Third Eye, the mind-reading hero. You were known for your ability to go into people's minds and read their thoughts. Even when they kept things hidden, you could find the information that you wanted.
You were a favorite resource for the local police department for that reason – it cut down on having to interrogate criminals when someone could just read their minds and find out what they needed to know.
Nezu had brought up hiring you at the last staff meeting. Having someone on staff who could figure out what they were feeling and thinking even if they didn't feel comfortable discussing it openly could be a tremendous help to them. Especially since their students were particularly powerful this year.
“It's nice to meet you,” you said. “As most of you know, I'm Third Eye. I do want to go ahead and stress that everyone here is under a confidentiality clause when it comes to my powers. I don't go poking around in people's heads without permission unless they're criminals. Although...some people do have louder thoughts than others, and I can't help what I might pick up accidentally.”
Everyone mumbled their understanding.
“I'll start on Monday,” you continued. “I look forward to working with each of you.”
The next week, you were introducing yourself to the teachers in the staff room. You approached Aizawa as Principal Nezu had mentioned his class in particular was why you were needed here.
He nodded as you mentioned it. “I do have a couple of students that might need your guidance this year,” he told you. “I can discuss them with you later if you'd like.”
“That would be great. Could you--?”
“Aizawa, there you are! I've been looking everywhere...” Present Mic's voice suddenly trailed off. Both you and Aizawa glanced at him in surprise. When he didn't finish his sentence, Aizawa sighed and turned back to you.
“I'm sorry. I can only imagine the thoughts you might hear coming from his head.” You, meanwhile, regarded him curiously. Present Mic was well known for his loud and ranting voice. To have it disappear like that was a bit strange, to say the least.
“Hey hey hey! You're Third Eye, nice to meet you!” Present Mic suddenly bellowed. His friend grimaced at the sudden volume change, but you smiled.
“Nice to meet you, Present Mic.”
He blinked. “You know me?”
“I'm a fan of your radio show,” you admitted before you saw Principal Nezu waving you over from the doorway. “Excuse me.”
Present Mic stared after you, his mind obviously far away. That is until Aizawa elbowed him.
“Oi, what were you screaming about earlier?”
“Oh, right!” the blond exclaimed as he came back to his senses. “I heard that Midnight wants to take the teachers out for drinks this weekend. You're coming, right?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Come on!”
That weekend, Midnight did indeed drag all the teachers out for drinks. Even Aizawa, who was curled up in his sleeping bag.
“We need a morale boost. We've had a hard year, and with you just starting, we have a reason to celebrate,” Midnight had explained to you. Or maybe she'd thought it, sometimes it was difficult to tell.
After just a week, you were able to tell who to keep an eye out for and who to ignore as hard as you possibly could. All Might and Midnight tended to think too loudly, which went with their personalities. In addition, several students including Bakugo, Midoriya, Iida, Kirishima, Tetsutetsu, Monoma, Mineta, and Mina were all easy to hear even if you weren't trying.
You might accidentally catch snippets of other students and teachers' thoughts but it was very rare and never enough to connect it to what they were actually thinking. But there was one person that you couldn't seem to figure out.
“Congratulations!” Present Mic suddenly exclaimed, throwing an arm around your neck as he raised a cup.
“Surviving a week here is nothing to be taken lightly,” Toshinori added from your other side, his cheeks already dusting a light pink from his lack of alcohol tolerance.
“Less talking, more drinking!” Midnight commanded, cracking her whip at her coworkers before the owner of the bar started coaxing her to put it away for everyone's safety.
“Cheers!” you all exclaimed, minus Midnight, who Cementoss was trying to restrain from using her Quirk on the owner to get her way. Everyone's thoughts and speech began to blur together, making it hard for you to distinguish who was actually speaking and whether it was directed at you or not.
But one voice easily cut through the rest.
“This is nice. We should do it more often,” Yamada said softly beside you.
“I'd like that,” you replied.
He glanced at you and stiffened. “Y-You heard me?”
You turned your head to face him, confusion written across your face. “That's impossible. I've never been able to hear you before now!”
“There's not much going on in there to begin with, but he forgets about everything else when you're around,” Aizawa's voice grumbled from behind you as he swiped a drink. “He's just too drunk to keep his thoughts in check now.”
“Traitor! You swore you wouldn't say anything!” Present Mic practically screamed, both in his head and with his amplified voice, nearly knocking you off your seat with the force of it.
The man in question shrugged as he settled back in his sleeping bag. “I got tired of waiting for one of you to figure it out.”
You listened in amazement as his voice and thoughts began to contradict one another, switching volumes, trains of thoughts, and even pitch with each passing moment. It was like some kind of auditory puzzle just to try and make sense of it but you were content to listen.
Eventually, he realized you weren't listening and grabbed your shoulders, all subtlety thrown by the wayside now.
“Hey! Are you ignoring me?”
You shook your head. “Just listening. Your thoughts aren't amplified by your Quirk like your voice, so they're interesting to hear together.”
“Yes, we can come back here together,” he replied immediately. You both stared at one another, waiting for your thoughts to catch up.
“Oh, you meant the other “hear”--”
“--then it's a date.”
“Eh?”
“A date,” you repeated, picking up your drink. “When we come back next time.”
He stared at you in disbelief before responding with a “Yes,” his voice now just as soft as his thoughts had always been around you.
Aizawa rolled his eyes from his vantage point in the corner. Finally.
