Description
Two of Pyroraptor's major appearances in dinosaur media Dinosaur Planet (left) and Jurassic World: Dominion (right).Pyroraptor is an extinct genus of dromaeosaurid dinosaur whose fossils come from southern France and northern Spain dating back to the Late Cretaceous, during the late Campanian and early Maastrichtian stages 70.6 million years ago. The first (and so far the only) remains of Pyroraptor were discovered in southeastern France, at the La Boucharde locality of the Arc Basin in Provence. Its full name Pyroraptor olympius means “Fire thief of Mont Olympe” as its remains were discovered after a forest fire occurred near Mont Olympe.
As the dinosaur is known from partial remains, little is known about this dinosaur and not much is known about it leaving to be largely excluded from popular media. However it has made some appearances in dinosaur media at times. The most notable appearance of this raptor was in the 2003 Discovery Channel miniseries Dinosaur Planet (which was my first exposure to Pyroraptor) concerning a male individual named “Pod” who initially lived on the European mainland with his two sisters until a tsunami washed them into the sea. Pod then is swept onto Hateg Island were he meets dwarf members of dinosaurs he knew back home and stays on the island as his empire.
Pyroraptor has been confirmed to make yet another major appearance in dinosaur media with the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion alongside the veteran Velociraptor and new arrival Atrociraptor. Unlike the two latter dinosaurs, Pyroraptor in this movie while be cloaked in feathers and even have wings on its arms. From we can see in the film, the individual is seen on a snowy region attacking Owen Grady and Kayla Watts.
Fun Fact: In between these two major appearances, Pyroraptor has even been featured in video games for the Jurassic Park franchise such as Jurassic World: The Game and Jurassic World: Alive.
Also Happy 27th Birthday to Nick Robinson, actor of Zach Mitchell from Jurassic World!
