Description
Twelfth in my Constellations series of stamps
One of the Zodiac Constellations and represents a crab. According to Classical Mythology, a crab was sent by Hera to her sworn enemy, Heracles, who was fighting the Hydra. The crab bit Heracles; this resulted in the crab being crushed. Sensing the crab's work in distracting her enemy was done, Hera placed the crab in the sky. In Medieval times, Cancer was considered a "Dark Sign" due to the Constellation having few stars. Ten star systems in Cancer have been discovered to have planets. The Constellation is known for "The Beehive Cluster", an open cluster.
