Description
"I'm not sure how long it took for us to realise we were being followed. We hadn't been down in there long before we started to get that feeling. Y'know? Hairs standing up on your back, skin crawling, that sorta stuff. 'Course, we thought it was just nerves at the time. This was our first time there after all, and when you're in the dark like that everything seems off. We really should've turned back then."
"Still, on we went. Our skins crawled more and more with time, and I knew that I wasn't the only one who felt like we were being watched. Yet still we heard nothing, saw nothing in that all consuming darkness. Every now and then one of us thought we heard something, but we couldn't be sure. Then one of us, Mike I think it was, had us all stop in our tracks."
"Somewhere behind us, something else stopped barely a moment later."
"I don't think I really need to explain how terrified we were then. As far as we knew, it was just us down here. Most avoided this place, said it was bad luck, and we weren't aware of anyone who'd recently come in before us. More to the point, if there was someone else down here, why would they be hiding? Why would they be following us, taking precautions never to be heard, never to be seen? Something was wrong, horribly wrong here. And as we turned around, we saw it."
"You've got to understand that it was dark, and even with our eyes adjusted to the darkness we couldn't be sure of what we saw. It seemed about the size of a person but the proportions were all wrong, the legs small and the forelimbs lanky, like it was used to walking partly on all fours. There was this hair, scraggly and unkempt, going from its head down to the very tip of its tail. And then there were the eyes, large round things which seemed to shine even in the darkness. Even now I still see them."
"For a few moments we were still, neither moving an inch. Then, slowly but surely, it opened its snout into a leer, exposing a row of small, sharpened teeth. The bloody thing was grinning at us! A thin forelimb lifted off of the damp and rocky ground, a single bony claw extending out to point back the way we'd come."
"We quickly got the point and booked it out of there. Even then we could all hear that thing following behind us, softly padding along the ground so quietly you mightn't even realise it was there at first. Slowly though it seemed to fall behind the closer we came to the surface, and by the time we got out it was nowhere to be seen. We couldn't get away from that place fast enough."
"Even now, I'm not entirely certain of what we saw, and I don't like to think of how lucky we might've been. What if we hadn't noticed? What if we'd kept on going as it came closer and closer? You know about all the disappearances that happen around there, the ones they put down to gases and the like. But if you ask me, there's something down there in those caves."
"And it doesn't want to be found."
~ Extract from the Edwards Testimony
---
The Edwards Testimony of 2005 is perhaps the most well known description of the so called 'Cave Things' but it is by no means the only one. Although the vast majority of recorded sightings appear to be found in Southwest China, there are accounts of them from every continent other than Antarctica dating back to as far back as the 2nd millennium BCE in certain cases.
The exact nature of the Things vary from description to description. On average they appear to stand at around 6 feet tall, albeit with a somewhat hunched posture. With their extended arms and short legs, they almost seem to bear resemblance to apes in terms of their proportions, although the similarity ends there. Although mostly left to drag along the ground, they do apparently be able to achieve some level of movement with it. As for their hair (Or feathers, the matter is unclear as to which one they are), it appears to mostly be brown to black in colour although others have been noted, and it appears to extend across the length of their tails, backs and head, although little elsewhere.
Much more divisive a matter however is that of their intelligence. Many of the recorded sightings such as the 1957 Haverton Case (Notable for being one of the only examples of a dead specimen actually being collected for close study, although it appears to have been lost shortly thereafter) seem to point to a level of intelligence around that of your average dog or wolf. Yet at the same time there are many of the earlier descriptions to consider such as the Jiangzhou Scrolls in which they are portrayed as wise beings and "speakers of great wisdom", whilst even a few of the more recent descriptions appear to indicate at least some level of higher intellect.
Perhaps the one matter which all can agree on is their habitat. As the name suggests, the Cave Things mostly appear to inhabit deep subterranean caverns and caves, although what exactly they consume is up for debate. Although the Haverton Case shows that they will on occasion make their way to the surface, for the most part it appears as though they prefer to remain in the damp and dark conditions that can be found beneath the ground.
For the most part the Cave Things have remained relatively obscure, mostly being considered things of myth and legend, a matter not exactly helped by the difficulty in obtaining any form of specimen at all, not to mention the consistent disappearance of those which are collected. Nonetheless however, since the dawn of the 20th century it appears as though sightings have begun to greatly increase in number. The Edwards Testimony was perhaps the main thing that brought them into the public eye, but in truth it was simply part of a trend that had been going on for decades before that point, and which only seems to be increasing exponentially since then. For most, definitive proof of the Cave Things' existence seems like only a short space of time away.
So, what can be said about these strange creatures? Are they but simple animals, or do they bear some semblance of higher thought like ourselves? Are they mammals, reptiles, or some new class of animal entirely? Do they even exist? None of these questions can be definitively answered yet, and only time will tell if yet more information shall yield itself about these enigmatic beings...
