Description
Ida sat down on the edge of the cot, exhausted. She’d spent the better part of the last week helping some others to track the so-called aliens at night, and looking for traces of them or any problems they could have caused during the daylit hours. The radio on the corner of the table was set to a news channel, the broadcast host talking about the state of some cabu populations after a bad storm a few weeks back. Seemed things were going well there at least. Beside her slept her beastling Bobo, smack in the middle of the bed. Ida looked down at the snoring little beast, a bit annoyed. She thought to move him but couldn’t bring herself to, he looked too calm. She wouldn’t have a comfortable time sleeping around him, but at least there’d be peace and quiet for the evening.
She stretched and leaned over to the radio, turning the dial. It crackled and buzzed as she changed channels, bits of conversation and music from other channels blipping in and out until she found the right one. A light tune came through the speaker now, soon backed by stronger instruments. If she had to hazard a guess she’d say they were brass but she didn’t know exactly. Ida closed her eyes and hummed along to it. Soon though, the music became less clear. Static-y, like it was between channels. Then the static overpowered the music with only brief bits of it breaking through the white noise, but only barely. Ida turned the dial back and forth, looking for a clear channel with no luck. It was all distorted sounds, dead air. She stood up and sighed angrily, walking to the window. The glass was mostly missing, having been broken in by the intruders to the bog and later swept up, and half of the curtain had been torn too. Pulling aside the sad excuse for a window covering Ida looked up into the sky. It was completely clear, no clouds or any hint of rain in sight. Confused, she looked down and out into the clearing between the cabins. That’s when Ida saw them. The red lights positioned like crosshairs, on the masked heads of two oddly dressed figures at the edge of the grounds.
She ducked below the window as fast as she could, not knowing if they’d seen her or if anyone in the surrounding cabins had noticed the presence either. Hadn’t they already searched this part of the bog? Why would they circle back if they hadn’t found what they seemed to want before? Ida took a breath, and snuck back to the bed, dragging her bag out from underneath. She began to dig through it, taking breaks to peek back through the window to keep watch on the intruders. She cursed at herself while emptying the bag, now panicked. Ida hadn’t brought much that could be substantial in a fight, mostly small animal traps, and a couple of small knives. She hadn’t thought about needing much more. Another look over the window sill. They were closer to the center of the clearing now, looking for something methodically. Ida grabbed the blanket at the bottom of her bag and flung it out, only to be shocked by a loud clang as the the pan she’d put in the blanket fell out of the folds and onto the wood floor. Her blood ran cold, she didn’t need to look outside to check for a reaction.
There wasn’t a chance they didn’t hear that. She sat on the floor, still in a dazed panic before a new thought hit her.
If they heard it, people in the other cabins must have as well. People who may have come better armed than herself.
And if they heard some commotion, maybe they’d look out and see the intruders. And maybe they’d come out to try and deal with them.
Ida looked around the cabin with new resolve, grabbing the pan and searching through her displaced belongings quickly. Out of the corner of her eye she spotted it, a small saucepan she’d also brought along sitting on the dark woodfire stove. She shot up to grab it, and then reached for the door. One deep breath, then another. Ida flung open the door and ran into the grass, shouting at the top of her lungs as she did and banging the cookware together over her head.

Question for Pete:
"So this is a weird hypothetical I guess, but just bear with me, friend. We know they're out here lookin' for something they think's important, and it's obvious enough that they ain't leaving without it." Ida pauses and looks at Pete, not sure how to proceed delicately. "You're saying it's cause of your research, but the important stuff's hidden off somewhere, pretty well too considering they haven't left.. I mean, I hate to put this idea out there but I wonder if they get frustrated tryin' to find it, whether they'd just decide to go after the man behind the research instead."
She tries to backpedal a bit, realizing that introducing the possibility of getting abducted to her friend may not be very productive here. "I mean whatever it is they're wanting seems important enough to both of you, and I don't know how it'll shake out of course... but if there's a chance of that happening, do you think it may be safer for both you and Tip to let them get whatever they're going after?"
