Of course the calf got spooked when Baxter made his approach, cowering closer to the body of their mother, making themselves as small as possible.
Baxter put his paws out, showing the baby no harm, speaking very softly. He stayed at a low level, continuing to talk quietly as he pulled out a small jar from his bag. He popped off the lid and held it towards the cattle.
The calf's nostrils flared at the scent of sap, and cautiously hopped forwards. They probably needed the pick-me-up after what they'd just been through.
In order to see the calf's leg and get them away from the mother's body, Baxter shuffled back on his heels, to a more open space. He was relieved that the calf followed along, shakely on three legs, but eager to have at that sap.
Once they were a fair distance way, Baxter placed the jar on the ground, and allowed the calf to lap up the sap.
Altas curiously watched the calf, kwaa-ing softly, while Baxter grabbed some herbs he collected earlier for healing. Granted it was easier for him to heal when the herbs were chopped up and made into a paste, but he didn't have that luxury right now, so he laid a few on top on the calf's flank and focused. He could feel his paw warming up with the magic, and see a green glow flow into his vision.
The calf didn't seem to mind, too focused on their sappy treat. From what could be seen the gashes closed up, but the calf still held their leg in the air. Earth magic healing could only do so much... Baxter decided to take the calf home to recover fully, as it was too dangerous just to leave them.
He just hoped Rattle Cattle calves weren't too heavy...
