A commission done on behalf of a friend of mine: Crusader-Ape . I recommend you check out his art page as he has amassed quite the collection of excellent writings and many great illustrations made by me and other talented artists.

Crusader-Ape obviously knows the lore of his setting far better than I ever could and you should go and check out his post of this drawing as well if you are interested in the lore behind this scene, though I will still attempt to summarize what's going on based on what I do know of his works:

The piece depicts a snapshot of a syncretic ritual carried out by a tribe of Cliffleapers called the Bleeding People. They are a bronze age equivalent society of alien beings who have come into contact with humans and through the exchange of culture adopted the religion of Christianity for themselves. Their original faith was monotheistic and, all in all, quite similar to the one they have since adopted as their own, down to and including a messianic savior in the form of the so-called, "Hidden Son.' Although the conversion process was rather easy, certain heterodox practices imported from their traditional religion have survived on into their current praxes. One example of this is the "First Kill Offering" - a way of offering up thanks to the Almighty for the blessings he has bestowed unto the people. A crowd of Cliffleapers have crowded together to watch as the high priest carries out the rite - burning the sacrificial offering and cutting one of his hands with a consecrated dagger so that he might add his blood to the flames and therefore reinforce the bonds of the covenant between them all and their God. An icon of the Hidden Son is placed in front of the fire, a familiar and yet alien depiction of Jesus the Mashiach post-resurrection. He is bloodied with the blood of evildoers and bears a curved blade that he has used to slice up a hideous serpent - the very embodiment of Death and Sin. He stands above it victorious, crushing its mangled body underfoot as the champion of Life and the sovereign of the World to Come. A human pastor of a Presbyterian-derived sect of the faith and his son occupy a place of honor, standing beside the priest as he conducts the ritual. His wife and eldest son watch from afar atop an outcropping of stone. The four of them are missionaries of a larger faith-based organization who have taken it upon themselves to convert as many souls as they can to the cause of Christ their king, including those who aren't even human.
