Thanks so much for this! I was trying to do blood splatters around the edge of a book cover and failing at it, and this was exactly what I needed. Also thanks for explaining the burn tool, it took me some time to figure it out since I just upgraded from CS3 to CS5.5. As soon as I finish the project I'll post it here and link back to you

Do some initial splats with red, then hit those splats with more splats, but using the burn tool instead of the brush tool. It burns in the darker red/blacks.
