Description [update] did a couple of clicks in Lightroom 3 and got the colour in the nosie down without destroying detail. [/update]

YES finally got it to work, it took me 4 goes because i keep screwing the AF (its quite hard to focus when its pitch black)
i love this (you can see the highway down the bottom of the shot)
exposure about 50min
[edit] wow i didn't expect this much and comments. thanks to everyone [edit]

How do you keep the exposure for 50mins? Last I checked, mine only went to 30seconds. Is your camera fancy, did you add a program to it? HOW?

In TV (shutter Priority) mode it only goes up to 30s. in M (manual) mode you can set it beyond 30s and it will say Bulb. You can do this on the 1000D

Oh really? I've got to try that! (my camera is conveniently a 1000D) Thankyou soo much!

np i had a quick look at your profile and saw you had a 1000D . Its ridiculous how little effort can be put in yet be so much more helpful, i wish people did it more often
if you have any more problems i'm happy to help

I don't have a tripod (or any way to get my camera to sit up at the angle I want it to)...I had a little 10" one, but my friend managed to brake a metal tripod

bad luck, this was taken on a mini-tripod. maybe its worth the $10 for a cheap mini tripod. I had a inca and it worked well, until i broke it

don't it take hours for us to notice that they have changed position in the sky?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

snaphappy7530 In reply to lordrahovart [2011-02-02 11:04:18 +0000 UTC]

no essentaily, it depends on the zoom of the lens, the more you zoom in the faster the stars move. at a standard zoom it only takes 30mins to 2hrs to get a decent rotation. "decent" depends on your taste.

This is eactly why i have been wanting to get a remote trigger, and for a few other reasons - but - i did try doing a few longer than 1 min exposures with my canon xsi - on bulb setting and with not the best kind of rickety tripod there was way too much camera shake, lol, hard to apply pressure to a button and not giggle it for long periods of time. So I ended up going with 30 sec exposures and higher iso speed. For me the star blur would be more of an arc - (north-east USA). Either way...very nice!

i accidently reloaded the page i have to type this twice
bit of a late reply this got lost in my message bank
this mightn't be a problem but anyway
you dont need a trigger if you go into custom settings there should be a setting called "mirror lockup" or something like that. turn it on. also i reccomend turning "long exposure noise reduction" on or the noise will turn to this: [link] (ignore the blur look at the noise) however the noise reduction will take a closed shutter version of the photo to elimiate noise which will take the same amount of time as the orginial shot. i wont go into how it works. anyway so turn on "mirror lockup" and set the camera to M-bulb- and a aperture < 7 with a timer of about 2 seconds and that should be it. when you are all done put your hand over the lens and press the shutter again. dont forget to turn those 2 custom settings off for general use to avoid any problems later.
im pretty sure i did this one but if it dosn't work you can always make a trigger out of a rubber-band a penny and some blu-tac

Nice shot, I suggest that you go into live view and zoom in then manual focus for doing critical focusing in the dark... Actually using the live view focus on EVERY landscape shot is something I suggest hahaha.
