well I guess I can give you a quick run down on how to do it to thank you for the Dev Watch
First thing is equipment.

I'm presuming you are using a dSLR camera.
To make things easier you should also have a cable release.

camera settings.

Make sure your camera is on FULL manual setting. (if you don't know how to use this yet you will have to learn.)

ISO: 100
F Stop: f/8 aprox. (this controls the intensity of the lightning. the larger the aperture [small number] the brighter the lightning.)
Shutter Speed: Set to appropriate level (This is the last setting you should adjust.)

Camera drive: continuous.
Auto Focus: OFF (set focus manually to apropriate distance.)

execution.

-set up your camera with these settings on a steady tripod on steady ground.
-Find an active area of sky (where there seems to be lots of lightning strikes)
-Compose your image with a good amount of this sky in it. Remember just having lightning doesn't make it a good shot. Try to have stuff in the foreground for interests sake.
-focus your camera and make sure auto focus is turned off.
-Now set your final camera adjustment. Shutter Speed. this should be set so the Ambient light (the light in the foreground and in the frame NOT including the lightning) is appropriate. This should mean if you took a photo and no lightning goes off then the exposure looks Ok.
-Now click down the cable release shutter button and LOCK it. Because your camera is on Continuous shooting it will take shots one after the other and hopefully capture the lightning.

If your camera pauses between frames for the same duration as the shutter speed this is your noise reduction kicking in. You either put up with it and get better image quality or you turn it off in the menu and capture more lightning strikes.

Now sit back and have a beer while your camera does the hard work. Remember if you didn't set up a nice photo to start your camera can't make it look good.

Hope this helps.
If you capture any good lightning strikes I'd love for you to Note me so I can see them.

Mike.

I love it! Especially the lights on the ground. How you take a pic of lightning? Cause aren't they like, flash really fast and you don't really know where they going to appear?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SnipePhotography In reply to azngal4lyfe [2008-05-09 14:39:04 +0000 UTC]

it is quite easy actually. You have to use longer exposures so there is a greater chance of capturing the image. this pic was a 25 second exposure.
