I don't recommend that, though they are not nearly as aggressive as people think.
They are just curious and swiping them makes them agitated.

They used to scare me too but I have photographed a lot of wasps this summer (I mean a real crazy insane number! )and despite provoking them by sticking my camera right up their noses I have no scars!

They really are quite decent chaps, when you get to know them.

Believe it or not, wasps are not nearly as threatening as even I thought they were. They have a lot of curiosity and want to know what everything is and it's this that gets them into trouble and a bad rep.
