Description Hello everyone. I'm SofiaBlythe. For this comparison, I'm comparing the King Of The Hill episode "A Rover Runs Through It" to the Littlest Pet Shop episode "Some Assistance Required". Both episodes center on characters having to deal with a harsh boss of sorts. In order to show why Littlest Pet Shop did better, I'll talk about: the story, the employees, the bosses, Entertainment, and the conclusion. Think of this comparison as my 5th anniversary tribute for the show. Let's start.

The Story:

King Of The Hill: The basic plot is where Peggy and the rest of the family go to Montana to patch things up with her mother Maddy when they discover that their ranch is in jeopardy of foreclosure. To make matters worse, Maddy is constantly criticism everything that Peggy does, no matter how minuscule the screw up. This episode is incredibly mean, and in a bad way. Any potential stakes are lowered with Maddy acting like a harpy of anger not just to Peggy, but also everyone else.

Littlest Pet Shop: There are two plots here. The main plot is where Blythe works at Mona Autumn's office for the day, but gets stressed because of the work she has. The subplot is where Tangier sabotages Russell and Zoe's photo shoot so he can get the attention. Both plots do have a meanness to them, but it works since one source is one that's always there and doesn't go too far, while the other source is from a new character not familiar with the characters.

The Employees:

King Of The Hill: Peggy isn't the brightest bulb in the shed, and is slightly annoying, but she's far more likable than Maddy. Unlike her, she's actually taking things in stride and just focusing on doing a good job, making her torture harder to watch as a result.

Littlest Pet Shop: The characters who stand out the most are Blythe, Zoe, and Russell, and they're pretty good. You feel bad for Blythe the right way since she's working in something she loves, and struggles to keep up, which can happen to anyone. It also helps that the episode established that she's being overconfident. Zoe's pretty good with how she looks out for Russell, who's also good since he's trying to make a good impression in an environment he's not entirely comfortable with.

The Bosses:

King Of The Hill: Maddy is just insufferable in this episode. If she were the tough, but loving parent who looks out for others, I'd be fine with that. What we get instead is a spiteful troll who takes pleasure in harassing Peggy. Even when Peggy actually does something competent, she acts all high and mighty in saying that there's no value in what she does. If that's not insufferable, I don't know what is.

Littlest Pet Shop: Although Mona Autumn does overwork Blythe, it's understandable since she's dealing with an important client, she gets comeuppance from an allergic reaction, and her personality was already established before. While Oliver is oblivious to Tangier's tricks, he never sees him do it, which makes him understandably upset when Russell supposedly messes up. He's otherwise a decent guy to work with.

Entertainment :

King Of The Hill: Whenever Maddy gets onscreen, things become sour very quickly. It doesn't help that more focus is placed on her making Peggy suffer instead of simply trying to make sure she doesn't screw up.

Littlest Pet Shop: While there is a cruelty factor, it works here since it's played for drama, which can happen in the workplace, and they don't go too far with it. Plus, there's enough humor to lighten things up.

Conclusion:

King Of The Hill: If the episode ended with Maddy showing Peggy some respect, I might've called it okay. What we get instead is a "joke" that complete it undermines the lesson the episode was trying to teach.

Littlest Pet Shop: The conclusion is pretty good. After Mona Autumn gets an allergic reaction, Blythe fills in for her at the meeting, proving how flexible she is, which ends in success. Zoe and Russell get back at Tangier without directly pranking him. It helps get across two morals: a) be flexible, but don't take on what you can't do (Blythe) & b) revenge is not the answer (Zoe and Russell).

Winner: Some Assistance Required

Here are the writers of the episodes.

A Rover Runs Through It: Dan Sterling
