1. Fired Up

Writer: Andy Guerdat

Director: Roy Burdine

Date: March 18, 2022

Synopsis: "The Chicken Squad tries to help out the Fire Chickens."

It's time to show some gratitude, but the right way. The episode has The Chicken Squad trying to thank The Fire Chickens for saving them by helping them out. However, their help isn't very effective. The episode goes a nice message on how you should know the time and place to help someone. Let's break this down.

The Setup:

Things start out regularly enough with The Chicken Squad fixing the elevator to Frazz and Riley's treehouse so that they can bring up friends up and gather more food easily. Coop says that he installed an overdrive button, making Sweetie and Boo weary. Yeah you can see why since he has a tendency to go overboard with his inventions and making sure that they're absolutely perfect. We're then proven right when the elevator starts going haywire. Fortune, The Fire Chickens (Scoop, Salty, and Big Roo) see this, and go to help them. They definitely show off quite a bit of style that makes them look cool, such as doing their own version of The Chicken Charge and going off in a fire truck. They then save the day and go back home afterwards. The Chicken Squad is grateful for what they did, and they want to make it up to them by helping them out. Of course, since they don't know what they need help with, they go to Captain Tully for advice. She says to find out what they need help with before going out to help them. Since they think they should do something more because of how much they did, we can see why this wouldn't completely register right away. They're overcome with surprise and shock.

The Wrong Help:

When it comes to trying to help them, it doesn't go as planned. We see them spying on The Fire Chickens in the bush by their house, trying to see what they need. Sweetie sees that Roo is about to step into a mud puddle and stops him. Of course, it doesn't go as planned when she finds out that he wanted to step in it. We do see that her strength could have been beneficial because of how fast she moved to get him out of the way. As for Roo's reaction, while he is admittedly surprised, he doesn't take it too hard, just politely telling her about his intentions. Up next, we have Boo. He uses his cape as a blanket to keep Salty and Scoop warm, showing his usual style and flare in helping others. That would be nice, except that it's summer weather, and they start to sweat a lot. They're at least polite enough to see the intentions behind the gesture, and just simply suggest using it for the winter.

Of course, things manage to get worse, but in the right ways. As they're eating lunch, there's a strange noise outside. As it turns out, The Chicken Squad is building a critter ball hoop on their house. They then say that they already have one in the backyard. It's here where they start showing some worry, which doesn't seem out of the ordinary since it almost resulted in property damage. When Coop sees their fire truck, he thinks about putting overdrive on it to upgrade it, which Sweetie and Boo are really against. It seems to work at first, but then it malfunctions and the hose starts spraying water everywhere, making a big mess. Yeah it's easy to see why The Fire Chickens wouldn't want them around since they caused quite a bit of damage from meddling too much in their day. At least they have the decency to offer to help clean up the mess, but they don't want it.

The Right Thing To Do:

The team goes back to Captain Tully, where they tell her what happened. She then tells them that they should make sure that someone wants the help, and that they shouldn't force it. I do like how she brings up an example of invading other people's privacy even if she wasn't doing to do it. She brings up how she once tried to fix the Squawk Box without asking them first, just trying to see what their reaction would be. It's very worrying, and only becomes relief when she says she just made it up. It's after this that they try to apologize. There's a problem though in that they think they're still trying to help and run off, accidentally getting stuck in their slide in the process. Yeah it's easy to see why they'd be nervous, but they didn't even try to talk things out. At least they do manage to help out for real when Sweetie uses her beads as a rope while Boo uses his legs to get them out. They get them out, and apologize for doing what they did. It's a nice moment. They then ask for help to make their ladder go higher, and Coop says yes. Since there was a mutual agreement, this ending is well earned.

2. Picture Perfect

Writer: James Eason Garcia

Director: Kelsey Norden

Date: March 18, 2022

Synopsis: "The Chicken Squad tries to return a smart phone."

This episode is a picture that says 1000 words. Joking aside, let's talk about it. It involves The Chicken Squad trying to return a phone that they found beforehand. However, Coop wants it for himself. Here we have an episode that gives a nice message on being able to do the right thing and return something that you found. Let's break this down.

First Half:

We start with Coop showing off to Sweetie and Boo an invention he made, a hoverboard called The Feather Flyer. He can use the smartphone (voiced by Alanna Ubach) to control it, and he's shown to be quite attached to the phone. It does work since he likes being able to make things better and easier with the power of technology. We see how beneficial this is when he shows Dinah a pretty path to the Seed Festival. Coop says he doesn't know what he'd do without the phone, showing how he's becoming a bit too attached to the idea of how helpful technology can be. Then the phone shows him a birthday picture of the previous owner, which is of a parrot who's been to a lot of places. Sweetie thinks that should return the phone while Coop wants to keep it since they need it. He is lying about the latter part since he wants to keep the phone, but we see that he's desperate.

When going to Captain Tully for advice, she says that they should give it back, and he does somewhat agree. He's saying it half heartedly, meaning that he's not completely onboard with the idea, but that also means he's not completely against it. We do get some nice detective work where they look at the photos and find out that he took one by the town windmill. They hit a dead end though since they can't find out where he is. It's here where they meet two pigeons named Flip and Flap (both voiced by Jeff Bennett), but they're not the most helpful. They seem somewhat absent minded and slow because of how they misinterpret questions (such as wondering if asking for questions counts as a question) and are somewhat irritated when they think they're being asked too much. They do at least offer what they need and say various things, such as how the parrot is named Pietro (voiced by Christian Lanz), he takes pictures there a lot, and he likes to hang out a lot in a meadow of red flowers. It seems like a dead end when he's not there, but with Coop's detective work, they look at the pictures more and see that he lives in a house with a triangle shaped window.

Second Half:

Now this is where things get interesting. They See his treehouse and go up to see if he's home. It's here where Coop just remembers why they're doing the mission in the first place, and is hesitant to return the phone. It makes though since he likes a good challenge that tests his intellectual prowess, and can't think straight if he's laser focused more on figuring things out and less on the why. To no one's surprise, he's not home. We just need to look at the clues again. He apparently wears a birthday hat behind a jungle backdrop. As such, they deduce that he takes a picture in the jungle every year on his birthday. That would be pretty cool, but when looking up where the nearest jungle is in the map, it's discovered to be very far away.

With all of this in mind, Coop sees this as an opportunity to keep the phone. Even if it should be returned, this decision does make sense from his perspective. He's basically abiding by the rules of "finders keepers", an admittedly simple, but technically fair rule if it seems like the owner can't get it. However, he does family, whether his own or others. As such, this next scene works. There's an incoming birthday message from Pietro's mother (voiced by Alanna Ubach), where she dotes on him as she wishes him a happy birthday. He feels bad for wanting to keep the phone when Pietro really needs it. While he can be blinded his own ambition, he's able to keep his head on straight when thinking about family. This actually helps him out when Dinah comes back. She shows a picture that Pietro took of her and the baby chicks, and it has a jungle backdrop. Through some deduction, he sees that he's actually at The Seed Festival and just liked taking pictures with the jungle backdrop. Plus, his brain is put to good use when he asks for a shortcut since the festival is ending soon, and he uses his feather flyer to find out where Pietro is, which is by the sheep herd. He's shown to be fairly charming with how much he values his appearance, yet is also very chill and laid back when talking to The Chicken Squad. When Coop brings up the message, he says that He got a new phone that has all his old photos, and he put the old one in the recycling bin. His mother just keeps forgetting that he got a new number. Coop asks if he wants the phone back, and he says that they can keep it, but he wants a selfie with them. This ending works since Coop was willing to do what Pietro wanted and he still gets to keep the memories. I call this solid.
