Description
I (eye) started using face reference at Posemaniacs.com, since I'm there every day to warm up with timed interval figure drawing. I (eye) figure (another pun on figure drawing) that if I approached portraits the same way I approach figures, I'll correct my weakness in the former, fast. And while it has helped already, I noticed something odd in the AI generated references. I can hardly believe it, but the AI doesn't do eyes well. Study closely and you'll detect uncomfortable effects, as if the eyes are not looking at the same fixed point, whether near or far. Also, it seems that one is a mirror transform of the other that in 3/4 vies has been distorted to account for the differing perspective. It may conform to a mathematically viable algorythm, but it produces an eerie effect. Adding to that, notice that all the faces are extremely comely and smiley. There are no grumpy, sad, worried or expressions of negative emotions. That is unnatural in itself, since of the six hard wired emotional facial expressions only one is "positive."For artists, it would be good to provide reliable, true, reference. Also, a mix of emotional facial expressions, not just smiles and seductive glances, along with a variety of faces - not all pretty and perfect like movie stars and Stepford Wives. And most of all, it would be good for artists to recognize the limitation of the AI, question it's guidance, because even though it makes things look perfect in virtual reality, they have a long way to go to compete with direct observation of what's real. Given a choice, I prefer photo reference to AI generated images
