Description
Tidied up this page of notes on Faigin's simplified head, the three part model. Obsessing on making it clear that establishing divisions and placement of the features when using the rule of thirds applies strictly to the face as a subdivision of the head. It does not apply to the head as a whole. The divisions are Widow's Peak (at top of forehead) to brow > brow to base of nose > base of nose to chin. The eyes are not a landmark using the rule of thirds with this model. To establish the eyeline, one must take account of the full height of the head - crown to chin; the eyeline is 1/2 that distance. There is a strong tendancy to confuse the browline and the eyeline, substituting one for the other in different systems of proportion, which results in unwanted distortions.PS - . I made this before I realized that the rule of thumb that makes the side view x2 the width of the front view measures from the tip of the nose, not the brow. I make this mistake all the time. I corrected it on the blue profile, but it shows on the upper right corner box head. It takes a while for the mind to round up all the data and reformulate it for practical use. Logic and reason are not enough. We've got to understand these things inside out through trial and error in a process of continuous correction, until what we "know" is right in words and theory works in practice.
