Description
I've been meaning to do one of these for a while now, but never really got around to doing so.I know I haven't been very active here as of late, but my drawing style has changed quite a bit in the recent months! I just haven't had time to upload art, but I decided maybe I'd give you all a preview as to what my new influences are in art.
I've been drawing a lot of people recently, trying to improve in those aspects and find a happy medium of a style that isn't too 'anime', but isn't photorealistic, either. As for the wolves that I think most of you follow me for- while I've been working on trying to get a more accurate anatomy, I've also voided some aspects in favor of a kind of stylized version [ think pointier ears, and a generally more lithe form ]. It's not too radical of a change, but it's definitely a difference. I practice both drawing realistic wolves and my stylized version just so that I don't depart too far from reality, though!
I really find it a lot of fun to draw meticulous details, even though it can be time-consuming, so I've tried reflecting that in my art. I've done a few pieces where I incorporate flora into the drawing [ maybe with flowers interwoven in hair or fur, and other things ]. All of this is a little difficult to describe, but I promise I'll be uploading art as soon as AP testing is over >.<
That leads into the first item on my influence map [ I'll be proceeding from left to right, top to bottom, just like you might read a book ].
1. I'm sure it's pretty obvious at this point that in the past year or so, I've delved into the wonderful and mildly terrifying world of anime and manga. This simple piece is from one of my favorite manga, Hana nomi zo Shiru, and I really enjoy how the flowers are nicely incorporated into the simple anatomy of the hands. When I'm drawing people, I try to keep some features such as the face and limbs very simple, with not much shading, so that the detail [ usually flowers or elemental patterns ] surrounding them will stand out more.
2. The first item and this item are by the same artist, Takarai Rihito. She's one of my favorite manga artists because she has a simple, clean, and light style that's easy on the eyes and looks amazing without being terribly detailed. [ and whoa, dem bishounen tho ] Even though I usually like detailed patterns, there's something about her style that's really appealing to me. In manga such as Graineliers, she contrasts the people, who are drawn with little ornament, with more detailed backgrounds, so that each stands out on their own.
3. Moving from quite simple to very detailed...I'm taking art history this year in school, and one of my favorite styles that I've learned about is Arabic calligraphy artwork. I mean, look at the patterns! They're so intricate, and the words are drawn such as they become part of the art. The juxtaposition of color makes for a vibrant and eye-catching image. This particular one is from the Mihrab in the Madrasa Imami; it's one of my favorites ^^ I could talk about Arabic art for a long time, but I'll cut it off here before I get carried away.
4. My favorite manga artist is Ishizue Kachiru ^^ She's got a pretty unique style as far as I've seen; I actually discovered her when I first started reading my favorite manga [ Ilegenes ]. Ishizue's style is so gorgeous ;_; it's got a lot of detail and a nice painterly effect that reminds me a bit of Howl's bedroom in the movie Howl's Moving Castle. And it's a little bit more on the realistic side, or maybe it looks that way because of the way she shades her art. Agh, I don't even know what to say here because I can't express my admiration in coherent words...
5. My grandma is quite well-known for her Chinese calligraphy paintings [ her works were recently on exhibition in Japan and Korea, I think ]. I remember sitting at the dinner table as a little kid, watching her pull out her multitude of brushes and create something that I don't think I'll ever be able to achieve. Even now, I can remember what she drew- golden-crowned sparrows and some sort of tree blossoms. I don't have any of photos of her works with me at the moment [ though one of them hangs behind our dinner table ], which is why I chose Shen Zhou's 'Lofty Mount Lu' instead. Again, this is a piece I learned about through my art history class. Rip my soul; looking at the detail is at once incredibly inspiring and crushingly discouraging. In general, Chinese calligraphy art has always been something at the back of my mind, but I've never thought to incorporate it into my art until now.
6. I've always been obsessed with Norwegian fjords for some reason. They're just so beautiful! I'd like to draw one in the background one day, but I'll have to work on my scenery skills first ^^'
Well, that's it! Yes, I'm alive. Yes, I'm still drawing. Yes, I realize this isn't a complex influence map, but I decided to stick with the ones that have had the most impact.
