Description
Was looking through my oekaki gallery on CS and found this thing I drew up last year. Completely forgot about this species concept, and I don't believe I ever posted them anywhere else. Figured I'd post this here because why not?So! I named this species the "Rotolin". I'm pretty sure the name is a mash up of words (since most of my species' names are), but I don't recall what exactly, and I never wrote them down either.
In-development because there's still some stuff I need to do with 'em.
Anyways, some info:
- Roughly the size of a large housecat.
- Diet consists mostly of fish, but also eats small birds and mammals.
- Endangered species. Only population is found on an island in an undisclosed location.
I still recall the weird plan I had for this species, they were to be a sort of "meta" original species, in a way. The lore behind them was this:
Rotolins are an endangered species in their world (which is an AU of our irl world, where everything is the same 'cept rotolins exist). One day, a young artist found out about their existence when doing a school project about endangered species. They liked how rotolins looked, and wanted to create a character based on them, mostly because they wanted to be cool and use an obscure species, but also to bring more attention to the endangered species. They did so, and that character ended up becoming one of their faves. They drew their rotolin char a lot, to the point of it being their fursona, and other artists on the 'net liked them. Soon other people began to also make their own rotolin characters, inspired by the young artist. Some people even used the species as a basis for their own original species. All sorts of rotolin characters ended up being created, from more "realistic" natural ones that closely followed real rotolin coloration/markings, to more "sparkle" ones that used unnatural colors and marking shapes. Some people even made rotolin hybrids. The young artist basically ended up making an endangered, obscure species a more known one, and had even raised money for a rotolin conservation via making rotolin adoptables.
...So uh yeah. Replace "rotolin" with an irl fairly obscure endangered species (saola ?) and you got a scenario that could very well be possible here.
Once I get more stuff developed with rotolins, I think making them an open species would be the way to go. I'll be developing these as if they were a real species here on Earth, and when I'm done with 'em, I want people to treat them like how I wrote in the lore. Make characters outta them. Make sparkle rotolins. Make rotolin hybrid species. Make adoptables. Treat rotolins the same way dogs are treated when it comes to the adoptable/species community. I think it'd be fun to see what happens, no?
