So, according to me, Pip's talent is his loyalty to those he's close to, along with those he admires (such as Luna). He'd take up arms to defend them — hence his Cutie Mark, a sword and shield. (Also, his British accent reminds me of medieval times, as well as knights.)

One day, Celestia announces that she wants to establish a branch of military in Ponyville. He decides to join it, but in order to do so, he has to get through the recruitment process.
