It had been more than two weeks since the small troop had been banned from flying by Toivo. The first week they had been able to talk themselves out of it with the daily combat exercises, but slowly not only the other recruits made fun of them, but also the experienced dragon soldiers brought more and more often sharp-tongued comments, which slowly got on their nerves. Toivo, on the other hand, seemed to be unconcerned. Day after day, he let his recruits train in battle, not caring about the wounds they suffered. Even Elena was unsettled - she had never seen her cousin so angry and harsh. And now even over such a long period of time! But whom should she and her friends turn to? Anyone they would tell what had happened would immediately throw them out of the army! They all agreed on that. Because the daily combat exercises had had one good thing - the small team had grown together. Even Kereno had become a little more sociable.
"Guys, seriously, we have to do something!" said Aluka, who was hobbling along next to his friends because his bruised shoulder was bothering him. "If this keeps up, we'll be invalids before we've even faced an opponent! So... At least me and Kereno." he added, with a sideways glance at Elena, who had made a name for herself simply by appearing in a dragon of the enemy shadow army during their recruitment battle. "Don't you think you could have a word with your uncle, Elena?" The dragon girl bit her lip. Not that Aluka brought this suggestion lightly. They had already tried to talk to Toivo several times, but he hadn't even thought it necessary to listen to them. Tommy also made a worried face, and looked up at his friends. Then he took heart, quickened his pace and stood in the narrow corridor in front of the others, blocking their way. First he looked around cautiously to see if anyone was listening from one of the other caves, because this was nobody's business but their squad's. But they were lucky. Either all the dragons had already left for exercises or whatever else they were doing, or loud snoring could be heard from each of the caves. "We need to rectify the situation once and for all. And we need to do it today. Otherwise, we've had an instructor for the longest time. Yesterday my father asked me what was going on with us. And when my father takes matters into his paws, it ends unpleasantly. After all, his useless son should not have a good time here at the expense of the army, but be trained so that at least someday there is a possibility that he could be helpful." "Ouch!" escaped Kereno. It was well known that General Aaron was not the friendliest, not even to his two sons, but that he felt such contempt for his younger son was something no one had ever known before. "All well and good, but is that what you want to tell Toivo?" Tommy contracted until he was almost a ball with legs. "Are you out of your mind? Even if I dared, Toivo would either ignore me or I would have been alive for the longest time. If he's already like that to his own cousin, what's he like to his worst rival's little brother?" Tommy shook himself. "No. We only have one chance - and that's if Elena tells him. She's close enough to him that he won't just rip her to shreds right now." Elena laughed in exasperation. "And how on earth do I get him to listen to me?" Kereno and Aluka looked at each other. "Leave that to us. All you have to do is talk. And Tommy - do you dare, when I tell you, to shut Toivo's muzzle?" Tommy felt a cold shiver run down his spine. "Not really, but I'll have to if I have to." He gulped as he thought of Toivo's sharp teeth and massive jaw. Elena nodded and gently pushed Tommy forward. "Good, then let's not waste time."
Today, once again, the combat training was to take place on one of the remote bluffs of the mountain range, which ended in a pretty little valley with a beautiful blue lake. Actually a beautiful scenery, which the recruits had not yet been able to admire once, as Toivo had shooed them up and down the steep slope and had smashed against it many times. Also this time the dragon was already waiting on the top of the mountain slope and looked down with a stern look on the recruits, who were gathering down in the valley. This time, however, they stood quietly at the bottom and simply looked at Toivo, unblinking. Toivo growled angrily and flew down. He landed hard in front of the recruits. "What is this again? I thought the last few days had taught you not to mess with me?" Toivo asked the recruits standing in front of him with an unbearable arrogance. Elena wanted to say something back, but held back. Kereno and Aluka, who had spent the way to the training thinking up a battle plan, tensed their muscles. Toivo snorted and shook his head. "Well, if you won't have it any other way..." he looked at his recruits. "Then the first punch of the day is mine!" he was about to pounce on Tommy when he leapt toward his instructor, landing on his muzzle and wrapping his entire body around it as best he could. Shortly after, he hit the ground along with Toivo. Kereno and Aluka had pounced on Toivo and pinned the outstretched wings of the turquoise Dragon to the ground. While it was Aluka's job to keep the wildly lashing tail under control, Kereno threw himself full force at the dragon's body. Toivo crashed to the ground like stone. He was a strong, trained dragon, but so much weight was too much for him. Growling, he tried to break free, but Elena extended her claws and growled back. "Quiet!" she hissed at her cousin, staring into his eyes until he could no longer hold his gaze. "This time you will listen to us." she said in a tone of conviction, briefly sorting through the thoughts in her head once more. Now she had to be quick, because she didn't know how long her friends could keep Toivo down. "Toivo, we can't go on like this. And I don't even mean the combat training, even though that's what we're all really hurting for. Yes, we screwed up, you made that more than clear to us. The flight ban was also a just punishment, but you're slowly taking it too far. You have become unspeakably arrogant, self-important and you don't seem to give a damn about us anymore. Even if this is not the dragon I followed, not the dragon I know, well, maybe I could live with that. but the others cannot. We always return from the trianing injured, with no chance to regenerate. Aluka, for example, has been walking around for two days with a bruised shoulder and is simply unable to fight. But you don't seem to care. Although I can see that you are well aware of this fact. And even if we can put up with it, how long do you think it will be before something more serious happens? Something we can't hide from the others anymore? Yes, the others! Dragons are already asking. Joked. Even the higher ranks have noticed that something is wrong. And Tommy's father talked to Tommy yesterday and asked if he is learning anything at all. And you know what happens when Aaron gets involved, then not only your reputation is down, but also Uncle Eternity doesn't come out of the whole thing blameless. And for Rowca it's a found food anyway. He'll give you the death blow. Do you really want to jeopardize your entire career and possibly that of your father for a small moment of power?" Of course it was a risky game to take now, she knew that herself. But since Toivo had shown no interest in his recruits for the last two weeks, it seemed to Elena the only way to get close to him.
Toivo growled and wanted to say something, but Tommy clutched Toivo's mouth as if his life depended on it. With a wave of her paw, Elena told Tommy that he could let go of Toivo now. Slowly, the purple dragee released and quickly jumped to the side as soon as his legs were free. Toivo didn't look like Elena's words had brought him to his senses. "You..." growled Toivo in deep anger. "You of all dragons dare to attach my reputation?" the turquoise dragon tensed his muscles. "You, who was the reason that I and father are now on the brink? You, who just came here against all reason, and mixed up the old established lives? You, who not only disobeyed all the rules yourself, whether spoken or not, but also incited other dragons to risk their lives on a whim?" Toivo managed to straighten up a tiny bit and stared at his cousin with such fury that her blood froze in her veins. But now she had to remain calm. "So I'm the source of your anger, right? Me as a troublemaker who has upset the well-oiled Dragon Force life and still does with my unconventional ideas?" Toivo only snorted contemptuously. "Then let's settle this once and for all. You and I in a duel. If you win, then in order to preserve your reputation, I will simply fall behind the other and then retire as soon as an opportunity presents itself on the grounds that I am not fit for the Dragon Force. If I win, then I get to stay and you will and train decently. Agreed?" Toivo nodded. "However, I still have one condition." added Elena. "What?" growled her cousin. "If I drop out, you make sure that Aluka, Kereno and Tommy are placed with other instructors. They don't deserve you treating them like this, and the Dragon Force needs them. They need an unbiased and fair instructor." Toivo agreed with a nod and Elena took a step back. "Let him go guys."
