Eos was sulking. He knew it but couldn’t stop. His body and his spirit ached painfully and a deep longing to be free filled his heart, causing it to overflow into his chest.
Eos was captured. Stuck.
The humans had caught him in a terrible trap that had left him bruised and bleeding. Now, he stood in a manicured pasture with a large, wooden fence encompassing a small space. So far, he had refused the food and water his handlers provided. He was hungry and thirsty and in so much pain, pain, pain.
His only solace was that Oko had somehow managed to escape.
Eos sighed loudly into the night air, his breath wafting in front of his face. Looking up, he gazed into the starry night sky, willing the stars to answer his pleas.
Movement from outside the fence caught his attention. With ears perked, he peered into the darkness, squinting but barely seeing. Was it one of his herd members? Had they found him? Had the stars granted his wish?
Silky smooth movement again and now the outline of a horse. Eos’s eyes widened.
She was a mare unlike any he had seen before. She looked as if she had fallen from the sky and graced the Earth. Her dark pelt was covered in stars and her eyes were two pale, full moons. Those moons looked at him now and Eos felt a deep sorrow.
“It’s…you.” Eos said, voice barely above a whisper. “The fallen stars we saw that night. You’re real. You’re really here.”
Eos shuffled awkwardly before bowing his head low.
“Please don’t do that. Not to me.” the mare said softly as she approached the fence, devastatingly out of reach.
“I have to know. What is your name?” Eos asked, desperate.
The mare paused, silent as the night sky, and then replied, “Sirius.”
“Sirius…” Eos repeated, the name delicious on his tongue. “Sirius of the Stars.”
“I’m no star…” Sirius said, low. “I am wretched.”
Eos blinked, dumbfounded.
“I am the reason you are behind that fence. I am the reason you’re here. I am the reason you will never see your family again.” Sirius said, voice lacking emotion.
Eos felt as though he had plunged into an icy river. He hissed through his teeth at the feeling, reeling away from the starry mare. His eyes narrowed now, suspicion running high.
“W-what do you mean?” he asked. “The humans trapped me–”
“I trapped you. With help.” Sirius cut him off, stepping forward.
Eos didn’t know how to respond, so he stayed quiet and waited.
“One of my stallions convinced a colt in your herd to trick you.” Sirius finally began. “He led you into that canyon on my command. I knew those humans would capture you. I wanted them to.”
Eos gaped. Oko…had betrayed him? This was all planned?
“Why?” he asked, numb.
“For love.” Sirius said simply, before beginning to turn and leave. “The cruelest reason of all.”
“Come back here!” Eos cried, rushing the fence, the wood leaving splinters in his chest. “Let me out! You owe me that much!”
“I don’t.” she said over her shoulder, beginning to sink into the night. “Farewell, Songbird.”
Eos panted with effort, trying to push and ram his way through the fence, rearing and bucking in frustration and screaming at the sky in fury.
“When I get out of here, you’ll pay for this!” he threatened, eyes blazing.
Another horse-shaped figure, larger, joined Sirius before she completely disappeared. Eos could see his blue eyes staring in his direction. A white flash of teeth as the stallion smiled wide. Then, both horses turned…and were gone.
Eos was alone.
