This year’s spring piece: the season of Spring in physical form. I once viewed this season as filled with cute, fuzzy animals and the return of pleasant weather. In other words, all things warm and happy. However, that thought recently changed as I started rewriting an old book of mine. It caused me to reconsider Spring in the wild North, and as I did, I saw the season in a new light. Or, perhaps, it’s more accurate to say that I saw Spring in its fullness. Some years, Spring comes roaring in and puts Winter to swift flight. In other years, Spring comes in battered and with bloody knuckles as she fights for every inch of ground as Winter resists her. Spring also has two faces. One is the joy of new life. The other is death. Some new life is born and thrives. Other life is snuffed out with swift violence when it has barely begun living. This season clearly reveals Life’s softness but also its brutality. New life is a miracle, but so is the life of an adult creature. The emergence of new saplings and plants is a miracle, but so is the unfolding of leaves and the formation of cones on the mature ones. The power and magic that set forth life in the very beginning is still at work and will continue to do so even as the world becomes more chaotic.
