Most shrunken people end up experiencing a depressing existence filled with social isolation, destitution, or enslavement; but a lucky few, those with affluent community ties and a strong family support network, go on to lead semi-normal lives and make fulfilling progress towards their professional and personal aspirations. However, even shrunken people who should consider themselves extremely fortunate deal with stress, anxiety, and regret which far exceeds that of their giant counterparts. For this reason, more and more psychologists are studying the unique mental health challenges associated with the shrinking process and being tiny.

Here, Dr. Marie Thornton consoles one of her newly shrunken patients with a modified version of “talk therapy”, complete with a perfectly scaled couch and soothing background music to make him feel more relaxed and comfortable. The Doctor addresses the tiny man in a gentle clinical voice, explaining to him that his feelings of inferiority are justified and valid for many real reasons that cannot be avoided because of his size. . . but these feelings shouldn’t be allowed to overwhelm him, and there are practical techniques he can learn to cope with his predicament.

Having listened to four or five different stress relieving techniques which could be tried at home, the little man started to feel better about his future and his place in the world. He had successfully put his guard down and began to de-stress. However, all this progress evaporated the second Dr. Thornton arose from her chair at the end of their session, standing to her full height while towering over the pitifully small man standing atop a regular glass table which easily supported his trivial weight. Faced with the giant woman’s inconceivable large frame, the little man felt his anxiety rising with the length of her fitted linen pants, its ample fabric dwarfing him from eye-level like a skyscraper while he looked up and up at her well-dressed figure. More uneasiness flooded his psyche as the giantess moved ever-so-slightly, her delicate fragrance cascading down upon him like a diffuse and invisible fog, the smell of which served as a mocking reminder of their respective genders and the cosmic role-reversal that their size entailed. The little man stumbled back, overwhelmed. The stark professionalism of her confident demeanor mixed with a femininity which oozed through every strand of her designer outfit struck him like an avalanche of humiliation, thoroughly pulverizing his masculine self-perception under the weight of her obvious superiority. A superiority which was indisputably evident when compared to his own doll-sized frame. The Doctor commanded a respect which went beyond her professional success and social status; a respect inherent to simply being full sized. The type of respect the little man knew he would never again experience for the rest of his life.

Dr. Marie avoided changing her expression when she noticed her patient’s face drop; a sign that his psyche was now racked with despair and anxiety. She simply noted to herself that the patient would require several more sessions to overcome his issues. Then she asked if he wanted to be carried to the door, or if he wanted to manage that himself. The little man politely declined to be picked up and carried. . . an impractical coping mechanism that would also need to be addressed in future sessions.
