This is a copy-paste (with some additions) from my Tumblr blog (spaztique.tumblr.com/ ), but it must be reposted.

Twilight of the Hakurei, the club-wide comic tennis/RP (walfasstationwagon.deviantart.… ), is turning out just as I suspected: AMAZINGLY. However, one thing that really astounds me is how well the character system is working. If you're not familiar, it's simply this:

1. Pick the character's biggest strength that affects other people. Note the key phrase, "that affects other people." For example, "He's really good at cooking," is not a strength: that's just a regular skill that only applies to one area of life and doesn't really affect others. However, "He's a fast learner," or, "He pays attention to detail," or, "He's very generous," is a strength because it applies to more than just cooking, but any other skill and especially relationships.
2. Pick the character's biggest weakness that affects other people. Once again, note the key phrase, "that affects other people." Saying, "He's never had a girlfriend," is not a weakness, nor is, "He's a nerd," or, "Nobody likes him." Real weaknesses include, "He's really shy around people," or, "He is untrustworthy to others," or, "He has temper issues."
3. Pick which of the two is stronger. The weaker trait will become the main personality. The stronger trait will be brought out in times of great conflict.

And that's all you need to make a compelling, easily-adaptable character. Boiled down to a formula, it looks like this:

Strength + Weakness x Which is stronger = Character.

The thing I like about the two traits system is that any two traits and which one wins can make any number of characters. For example…

(Strength = Bravery) + (Weakness = Selfishness) x (Strength < Weakness) = The wannabe hero who is really a glory hound. He'll act brave in many situations, but in the end, he's only in it for himself.

(Strength = Bravery) + (Weakness = Selfishness) x (Strength > Weakness) = The Knight in Sour Armor. This hero acts selfish most of the time, but in the end, this person really does want to do the right thing.

(Strength = Kindhearted) + (Weakness = Bitterness) x (Strength > Weakness) = The classic tsundere. While she (they're usually shes) is a jerk most of the time, she'll always end up doing nice things for others (not because they like you or anything, idiot).

(Strength = Kindhearted) + (Weakness = Bitterness) x (Strength < Weakness) = The classic yandere. Sure, they'll be super nice most of the time, but make them snap and whoever is in their path is in for a very bad day.

What's cool is that you can develop a dynamic cast by recycling the same traits over again and switching around their positions.

Let's see what characters we can draw from this…

(Strength = Intuition) + (Weakness = Fear) x (Strength > Weakness) = Luke Skywalker from Star Wars

(Strength = Selflessness and Honor) + (Weakness = Selfishness and Bitterness) x (Strength > Weakness) = Rick Blaine from Casablanca

(Strength = Acute sense of Justice) + (Weakness = Losing touch with humanity) x (Strength > Weakness) = Superman (and sometimes a great number of superheroes)

(Strength = Determination) + (Weakness = Regret) x (Strength > Weakness) = Dom Cobb from Inception

(Strength = Honor and Morality) + (Weakness = Paranoia) x (Strength > Weakness) = Hamlet

(Strength = Honor and Morality) + (Weakness = Paranoia) x (Strength < Weakness) = Othello

(Strength = Honor and Morality) + (Weakness = Too Idealistic) x (Strength > Weakness) = Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay Night

(Strength = Self-Awareness and Honor) + (Weakness = Selfishness and Hedonism) x (Strength > Weakness) = Brolli from Diamond In The Rough.

Quite an amazing system, isn't it? So many characters can pop out of just that simple formula.

If you'd like this system explained a little more, post a trait set below and I can calculate what the character will act like (plus, I could probably give you some contrasting characters to go along with it).

Your character is rebellious against authorities and relies on his own instincts.
But his heart is always in the right place and he will push through any mistakes he puts himself in with his determination.

Strength > Weakness: I can see this two ways. Either your character is dedicated to doing the right thing but is willing to do bad things to make it possible. Or, your character is generally impressive and admirable at a distance, but is cold or mean in person.

(Strength = Fast Learner and Heroism) + (Weakness = Self-Doubt and Ignorance) x (Strength > Weakness) = A hero who's able to pick up on new skills and put himself before others, but deep down questions his own actions. He questions if he's truly doing the correct thing, or if he's paving the way for a greater evil.

A person who prefers to stay indoors and read books than to communicate with other people. He/She (probably) lives alone surrounded by a lot of books, has only a number of friends, probably has a cat to keep him/her company(or any other pet, but a cat seems better).
When forced to go out (like go buy some stuff or smth) Most of the time he would probably be wearing earphones/headset(just to avoid communicating random strangers). and when he's forced to talk to people he would actually look like    (or if you want the shy type   but since you said 'hatred'... )

although I think bibliophile is not a very good strength since it does not really affect anyone.
I tried my best...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsycheStar In reply to ReignShine [2016-11-12 09:02:38 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to think that (selflessness)<(isolation)= hesitant. He wants to help people but he is mentally unable to because if he tried he'd have a hard time because he wouldn't understand the problems other people have. And if it was (selflessness)>(isolation)= clumsiness? or ditzy-ness? I just used your definition of "isolation" (maybe awkwardness is more appropriate). Since he'd want to help but is too incapable to do it properly?

I hoped this helped maybe haha

I'm curious because these are two traits I have used before, though the character hasn't been used much, so I wonder what anyone could pull for a personality with these.

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

EmmaTheUnicorn In reply to GreenFlaringDog [2016-12-30 06:34:49 +0000 UTC]

This person can look after him/herself. Their intelligence allows them to apply their knowledge and skills to get through many situations both with others and independantly. However, this independance comes with a price. Their 'lone-wolf' mindset has left them unsympathetic to others, willing to leave someone at the drop of a hat, or rather, a coin. As well as this, their greed for money can drive them to do cruel and dangerous things, throwing someone in a dire situation to the wind.

DimmedFlame In reply to GreenFlaringDog [2016-11-12 15:10:20 +0000 UTC]

In my opinion, these traits combined together is a character that is smart and depends only on themselves in most situations but sometimes, they become apathetic to other's needs and problems. They turn towards what they want first before anyone or anything else and this causes them to be seen as cold-hearted people. However, a lot of people won't deny that their knowledge on various things is helpful in many ways.

Does that help a bit?

My Character shows both signs of selfishness and selflessness. It all depends on the situation. In the end he selflessness wins over the selfishness. I felt I should explain, it's a bit contradictory like kindhearted and bitter. Hopefully I picked my traits properly.

Ravensie In reply to TeraOfTheAbyss [2016-11-28 19:26:08 +0000 UTC]

try adding a bit more "Weakness" since that overcomes the strength in your equation. Maybe their too shy sometimes and unintentionally becomes a bystander to something bad? to something they know they could've helped prevent but didn't?

TeraOfTheAbyss In reply to Ravensie [2016-11-28 19:59:48 +0000 UTC]

I was thinking they would be extremely paranoid about failure, but at the same time they would have a large will to learn.
But I'm not sure how that would affect other characters.

I'm wanting to make some adventure type of story, but with a fairly relatable main character.
So I'm not sure how the weakness trait would work for a story like that.

Any other ideas for some traits?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ravensie In reply to TeraOfTheAbyss [2016-11-29 12:01:03 +0000 UTC]

i think the "paranoid of failure" trait is suitable for a relatable main character!

it could effect the other characters in the aspect that the main character is possibly a little too bossy, so conflicts happen here and there. They get a bit arrogant to try and mask their fear of failure, so they try beyond their best to "look" the best, so they push themselves to do brave feats and go through countless adventure's to prove their worth.

At some point, this problem of their's starts bubbling to the surface then spills out and causes a bit of trouble, after some conflict, the friends of the main character try their best to resolve the issue by offering their assistance. The main character denies their help and says they must solve it on their own, or their just "another failure" or they'll let everyone down/not meet their expectations. Eventually after some more conflict(or a boss battle maybe), they come to term's that they don't have to do it alone and that seeking help doesn't necessarily mean you are weak or have failed, and then willingly admit that they need help and that to grow as a person, failure should be expected because it's only human to make mistakes.

If you want more traits that go along the line of "fear of failure", then theres traits like: Jealousy, anxiety, paranoia, perfectionism, having trust issues, etc

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TeraOfTheAbyss In reply to Ravensie [2016-11-29 22:24:54 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. Bossiness or arrogance wouldn't be something I would see in this character. More of the opposite, possibly.

I like to consider the character to kinda seem like they would be that one kid in school who is very smart, but sat in the corner where they are far away from everyone else.

Would distant, weird, or hard to understand be considered a weakness in any way?

If it helps any, I know they are an INFJ on the MBTI.
