Holmes, in addition to being one of the greatest detectives of all time, is a master of disguise, an accomplished amateur pugilist, and a practitioner of Baritsu - a Japanese form of wrestling.

Most of Holmes' Victorian-era adventures were chronicled by his faithful companion Doctor John Watson, who acted through a literary agent. Many details thought too sensitive to go to press were withheld; and the literary agent altered some of the publications for various reasons, resulting in seeming continuity errors. Some withheld adventures include: The Story of the Giant Rat of Sumatra, The Revenge of the Hanged Man, and The Adventure of the Mechanical Dragon.

At some point in his career, Holmes is known to have time traveled to the present day, where he sought out and had adventures with Watson's descendants in London and New York. After returning to his own time period, he was cryogenically frozen, to be awoken in the 22nd Century. He had several brothers, including Mycroft, Sherrington, Thorpe, and Sigerson.
