Description
Fantasy Fauna: Giant Spiders / Spiders of Leng. This is just a coloured version of the sketch I posted a while ago.Giant, bloated and purple-coloured spiders are known to exist in the realm of Leng in the Dreamlands (The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by H.P. Lovecraft).
They are presumably children of the human-faced spider-god Atlach-Nacha (The Seven Geases by Clark Ashton Smith) and/or the spider-idol Hlo-hlo (Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller by Lord Dunsany), both of whom are most likely children of Sniracte, the spider of the worlds (Time and the Gods by Lord Dunsany).
Atlach-Nacha sits under Mount Voormithadreth in what was once Hyperborea and eternally weaves a web between the waking world and the Dreamlands, the completion of which will signal or cause the end of the world. Hlo-hlo sits in his temple of Moung-ga-ling (is “ling” a corruption of “leng”?) guarding a large diamond and killing anyone who tries to steal it. He is also said to have created the world, but this might be a local myth from his worshippers in nearby cities. Moung-ga-ling is located near Spider-Forest, which is presumably occupied by Giant Spiders much like the ones in Leng. Large spiders, roughly the size of rams, capable of speech and worshipping Satan appear in The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth (by Lord Dunsany).
There are spiders on the Moon the size of islands and intelligent enough to take orders from the Selenites. These are presumably also children of Sniracte. It is said that the last epoch of Earth will be ruled by intelligent arachnids.
