Because of the gear-looking... Y'know, not a great joke, but it works.
Here's an absolutely massive assassin bug I found helping me tend to my broccoli patch... by, you know, assassinating some of those pesky cabbage loopers. 
With its mouth. Don't do bad things, kids. You might be reincarnated as a cabbage looper... and find yourself dealing with... those.
This bug was about two inches long--HUGE. Biggest one I've seen in a long while.
