Description
Ymir. I covered him in the Jotun post, but this will go a little more in detail on the first giant. Ymir is known as the First Primordial being born from the Ginnungagp, otherwise known as the Void, and into the growing universe he walked into. His first steps created the first primordial realms, Muspelheim and Niflheim, fire and ice, and continued on passing parts of himself into seven other realms across the universe. To keep them balanced and safe, he planets a small seed at the base of the Void that would become the World Tree Yggdrasil. He was a giant of a giant with animal legs and a tail, a body made of stone, dirt and iron with ice and fire flowing out of him as moss, ferns, flowers and other plants grow out of him.He was described by the Jotuns as a kind soul that sought no violence against anyone, a gentle caretaker. He mostly resides on Midgard, where he saw the Permian Extinction, the age of Dinosaurs, rise of the mammals, and for a time it was good. But then about 2.58 Million Years Ago during the beginning of the Quaternary Ice Age, a young Odin, an ambitious Æsir god, wanting more for his people decided to destroy Ymir and his people, claiming it a necessary act to bring order to the unknown realms out there. But really, it was means of control over what he hadn’t yet controlled. So he, the twins, Hœnir, and Lodurr assaulted Ymir, who didn’t fight back.
As he laid dying, he told Odin that “It will come back around, and you will be king, a king of nothing. You may kill me, but I am the realms, and they will never die.” Angry at the Jotun's mockery, Odin split his head open in spite. From there, he used Ymir’s body parts to craft the realms into his own making, spending 2 million years mapping it out and building his people and family, leading up to the first age of the Norse Legends during the Last Ice Age. Sad tale I know. I’d take a moment to reflect on Odin’s cruelty. Little changes to Ymir’s design, more animal parts and ferns.
