Description
“Odd-Job” Lou, the teddy bear shunter, named after my late grandfather.Lou was built at Swindon Works in 1965, and purchased by the Fat Controller the same year, having been touring the mainland in search of hardworking engines to add to his railway.
Arriving at Sodor, Lou was put on trial, shunting at various yards, harbors, industries and stations, his performance impressing the Fat Controller greatly. Throughout his trial, several of the engines who witnessed his work often commented on how he was tested through odd jobs. Lou liked how that sounded, and soon adopted the nickname “Odd-Job.”
A few weeks after Odd-Job had completed his trials, the Fat Controller came to see him, informing the diesel that a new branch line had recently opened, but the two engines who ran it were overworked, and asked him if he would like to become the line’s shunter. Odd-Job eagerly accepted, making his way to Kellsthorpe Road, where he was joined by a sterling single who introduced herself as Emily. Responding in kind, including his real name and nickname, the two made their way off the main line and down to the bottom station at Kirk Ronan, where they met and were introduced to Molly and Neville.
Odd-Job wasted no time getting a lay of the land, quickly familiarizing himself with both the stations and the goods yards along the branch line, which he soon put into working order, letting the troublesome trucks know that he would stand no nonsense from them.
Odd-Job is a calm and somewhat reserved fellow, happy to have a quiet life on the Kirk Ronan Branch Line, shunting coaches and marshaling trucks for Emily, Molly and Neville to haul, and the troublesome trucks don’t dare play tricks when he’s around. While he is generally polite, Odd-Job keeps his speaking short, and doesn’t beat around the bush, with varying degrees of tact. His fellow Kirk Ronan engines and the Fat Controller are the sole exceptions, as he is much more open and talkative with them.
