Description
~ Mavis is a privately-owned diesel shunter who works for the Ffarquhar Quarry Company, based at Ffarquhar Quarry.

She was built by the Drewry Car Company in 1962 by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn. Unlike most of her siblings, she was fitted with Cowcatchers and side plates to travel on Tramroads. Fitting the bill, that same year, she was sent to the Island of Sodor, bought by the Ffarquhar Quarry Company, more commonly known as Anopha Quarry, as they needed a shunter to manage the Quarry while Toby handled the Tramroads and his other jobs on the branch.

Back then, Mavis, being young and inexperienced, was full of ideas and was particularly fond of putting the trucks at Ffarquhar Quarry in different places, despite Toby's protests. As he puts it, "Trucks should be where you want them, when you want them," until finally, the tram engine lost patience with her and left the diesel to her own devices. Being urged by Daisy, Mavis started to ignore Toby's advice, as she believed, "Anything steam engines do, we diesels can do better." Sadly she ended up looking silly when she got stuck in the middle of a crossing outside Ffarquhar due to the frost and the trucks being troublesome, holding her back, something Toby had warned about

Mavis was then forbidden to leave the quarry as punishment. Still, when a thaw increased production at Ffarquhar Quarry, she persuaded the manager to let her go up to the first crossing to shunt trucks quicker and formulated a plan to pass the level crossing with help from the trucks. However, the plan backfired when the trucks decided to bump Toby, as he took the trucks instead, and he ended up being suspended dangerously by flimsy rails over a rushing stream, and Mavis had to help. She was horrified by what happened and confessed to what she had, but the Fat Controller and Mavis' manager were pleased by her courage and honesty and allowed her occasional trips to Ffarquhar.

Over the years, she's maintained her duties at the quarry very well, proving to be a reliable, honest, and hard-working engine, maturing into a motherly figure to the other engines. Although Mavis means well, she can at times feel cooped up in the quarry. But that's not to say she doesn't get her to wish to see more of the Island and make new friends. Engines like Bill, Ben, Salty, and Fergus have come to help from time to time, and she has been allowed to travel to other parts of Sodor, making Mavis a very happy engine.
