This was partially inspired by a creature from The Long Night, a total conversion mod by squamus for Dwarf Fortress.

Datajacks fill many roles besides being criminal cannon fodder for protagonist characters and mooks for Special Contract Division troops to mow down. They are often employed as explorers, scavengers, couriers, and more, and that includes delving dark and unpleasant spaces.

Frequently these 'Jacks don't return from their assignments, for obvious reasons in such a dangerous setting.
