Chapter Ten: Ball for a princessShiria smiled as she looked at herself in the mirror. She had a blue dress with white and gold beads. It’s halter neckline and ballgown dress shape fitted her perfectly. It had a small bow on the chest and the back of the dress by her waist. The dress faded out from dark blue at the top to white with scattered beads fanning out in swirls.
“You look beautiful.” Airi came in and looked at her. She wore a trumpet dress in white with black beads once in a while. She also had on a diamond necklace and some stud earrings. Her necklace went down in layers to three points. Her hair was in a bun and had a braid wrapped around the outside of it.
“Thank you. Thank you so much for inviting me and letting me stay.” She smiled.
“You’re welcome.” Airi walked closer. She undid her necklace. “You don’t have to thank me for anything. I always wish I had a daughter. You’re like one to me so you don’t have anything to thank me for.”
“Why are you taking that necklace off? It looks beautiful on you.” Shiria gasped.
“I think it would look better on you.” She slipped it around Shiria’s neck. “I was right it does.” They both looked in the mirror.
“Wow. I feel like a princess.” Shiria stared off into the mirror.
“Now lets braid your hair and we should be ready.” Airi said as she braided two small parts and combined them in the back with the rest of her hair down. “Now we can go to the ball.”
Shiria and Airi walked out into the hall and greeted by Blackcat and Cheshire. Blackcat had his black hair greased to the side. A tuxedo vest in bright red and a black long sleeve shirt with a pocket watch chain sticking out of the vest. He wore a white tie and pants. His red eyes shined as they walked out.
“Wow. I’m jealous Cheshy. I would’ve already been claiming her my own in that dress.” Blackcat elbowed Cheshire in the shoulder with a wink.
Cheshire wore a grey double breasted vest. A darker red ruffled dress shirt like Cheshire’s own hair. He had matching grey pants to go with his vest. He didn’t have his bell collar on to Shiria’s surprise. Both Blackcat and Cheshire had on the same pair of black dance shoes.
“Cheshire, won’t you say something to Shiria about the way she looks?” Airi asked. Cheshire stood looking down at Shiria. His face was turning pink. His eyes were big and bright in shock.
“Come on now she looks great! Tell her something!” Blackcat started to shake Cheshire.
“Umm…” Cheshire gulped. His hand started to shake. Shiria smiled.
“It’s okay Cheshire, let’s just go to the party.” She walked towards him. Airi made them lock arms together and walk down the hall behind her and Blackcat.
Once into the ballroom there were tables and sofas spread out. The actual dance floor was scarce with dancers just yet. The orchestra was playing very soothing music.
“The ball has just started so people will start to show up soon so you might as well eat some food while we’re here.” Airi smiled.
Blackcat smiled and ran to the stands of food. “I’m gonna find me a lady at the stand!”
“We should get something too. I’m a little thirsty anyway.” Shiria looked up to Cheshire. He stared off looking around the room.
“Alright.” He managed to let out. He turned and looked down at her. He led her down to a different food table. He quickly made a cup of punch and handed it to her.
“Thank you Cheshire.” Shira looked up at him. He still was a little pink. He had to be nervous. They sat quietly at a table. Cheshire ate some chicken and shrimp and a small salad. Shiria ate her salad that Cheshire made asking her what she wanted on it. She had a peice of bread and a little cookie.
The music started to grow a little bit louder introducing the official start of the ball. Airi gave a quick speech and everyone started to go towards the dancefloor. Blackcat walked by the table with a huge grin as he had two women in arms, twins by Shiria’s guess. He gave a quick wave as they walked him towards the dancefloor.
“Hey Shiria…” Cheshire trailed off.
“Yes?” Shiria looked up.
“Do you want to dance?” Cheshire looked towards her. Shiria smiled as he fumbled around his food. He jumped his face a little more red. He had a very embarrassed expression. “With me? I mean…” He slapped himself.
“Of course! Come on.” Shiria stood up. Cheshire led her to the dancefloor. The music slowed. The lights seemed to fade a little. Cheshire grew pink as Airi came over.
“Cheshire your hand goes on her waist.” Airi moved his left arm down to settle it at Shiria’s waistline. “Now a little closer. Cheshire you should know how to dance.”
Gulp. Cheshire’s face grew a little more red. He started to lead them slowly. Shiria looked up as he drew a deep breath.
“Are you okay?” Shiria asked. He lead her into a twirl.
“I’m fine.” He let out. She looked over and noticed Blackcat was making faces at him.
‘He’s not nervous when someone’s messing with him…’ Shiria sighed in her head. He spun her around again.
“This is getting boring right?” Blackcat groaned as he spun two girls around past them. Cheshire tripped as Blackcat dropped a handkerchief under his foot. Shiria fell as his weight pushed her down. They locked lips as Cheshire tried to keep her head from hitting the floor full forced. His body twisted around to hit the floor instead of hers.
Both winced at the force and stared blankly at each other as they noticed they still had their lips still touching each other’s. Blackcat had a devilish grin on his face behind the two. They quickly pulled apart redder than Cheshire’s hair. Airi came to make sure the two were okay. Cheshire didn’t look at Shiria.
“I’m going to go.” Cheshire got up. He didn’t look up only at the floor.
“Cheshire it was an accident.” Shiria tried to stop him. She looked around as people gave him cold stares and laughter. He heard someone call him a dog. The laughter got louder. Shiria was furious. He wasn’t anything like they called him. No wonder he wanted to leave.
“Airi can I go find him?” Shiria asked.
“I don’t think you can catch up to him but you can go.” Airi smiled. “He might be hiding somewhere in the garden or at the balcony by the west gate.”
“Thanks!” Shiria took off. She knew the west gate was near her room and the largest balcony on that side. She walked out on to the porch. The doors to it were opened however the balcony was empty. She looked down as the garden was huge. It took up the west, south, and east gate. She saw a figure walking down below walking through the maze. “Cheshire!” Shira yelled.
Cheshire looked up. He saw the large balconies lights shine brightly. Shiria was waving at him. “What?” He whispered to himself. He turned around and looked at the cherry blossom tree. “I’m going to go up there and tell her goodbye. That’s all that is going to happen.” He then ran towards the castle and jumped into a nearby tree and leaped from it onto the balcony. Shiria smiled.
“Cheshire I really enjoyed the dance we had.” Shiria tried to coax him off the perch he was on.
“N-no you didn’t.” Cheshire looked off at the wall of the garden.
“How do you know you aren’t me? Anyway I was going to see if you wanted to maybe try this over again.” Shiria looked at him shyly.
“We can’t turn the hands of time back.” Cheshire stated.
“Can we have one more dance? Please.” Shiria looked at him.
“Shouldn’t you be worried of getting back home?”
“You’re the one who found me.”
“Out in the middle of the forest. All by yourself with a fever. I brought you to help that’s all I did.”
“You saved me. Can’t you help me again?”
“How?”
“A dance. We don’t have to go to the ball. We can hear the music loud enough.”
Cheshire looked at her. “One dance then I leave.” He hopped off the balconies edge from his crouching position. He took her hand. They slowly danced around the balcony in the light of the hallway. After maybe twenty minutes the music died and Cheshire moved away.
“Wait.” Shiria grabbed his arm as he got up on the balcony.
“What? I told you I was leaving after we danced.” Cheshire looked at her.
“I know but I don’t know how I’m going to get home and neither does the white queen. And…” Shiria started to cry.
“Shiria…” He got down from his perch and kneeled next to her. “Do I make you feel closer to home?”
“I have a friend named Proto. He takes care of me like a big brother and you look just like him. You even act like him too.” Shiria hugged him uncontrollably.
“I’ll stay. I’ll help you get home just calm down.” He lifted her up bridal style, “Let’s get you to your room.” He laid her into her bed and waited for her to sleep. He walked out into the hall as Airi appeared.
“Cheshire you didn’t leave! Did Shiria find you?” Airi asked.
“Yeah. She’s asleep. She needs me to help her get home she’s getting homesick.” Cheshire sighed.
“Thank you Cheshire. We can start tomorrow. I think Shiria really appreciates your help and being there for her.” Airi smiled.
“Hey ya Cheshy!” Blackcat stumbled over.
“What’s the matter with him?” Cheshire asked as he came bubbly over onto him.
“Those girls pick pocketed him after spiking his drink. We were getting him to his room.” Airi laughed, “Can you help me get him to his room?”
“Alright! Cheshy gonna sleep with me tonight!” Blackcat waved as a maid walked by.
“Let’s get him to his room.” Cheshire started to drag Blackcat down the hall...
