Chapter Eighteen: The Roses Thorns“Hey Proto.” Kayato yelled through the door.
“He’s going to be grumpy if you wake him Kayato.” Ace warned.
“What?” An intimidating voice loomed from the cracked door. Proto stood half way through the door without his glasses he glared at the two. He was definitely upset. He had to move out of his house because of his health and live with someone he wasn’t too fond of.
“Um…” Kayato seemed to lose his words and duck behind Ace. Ace just sighed.
“You know you don’t have to get out of bed. I was trying to tell Kayato we could bring it to you.” Ace looked on unaffected from the sick younger brother’s intimidating tricks.
“I’m fine as long as I can stand.” Proto growled. Poke. Ace poked his chest where you could see was discolored and swollen. Proto held onto the door frame covering his mouth so he wouldn’t start coughing or spit up some blood.
“Get to your bed. Kayato’s bringing a friend over later so you know what’s going on.” Ace beamed at him.
“Ace shouldn’t you help him? You just hurt him.” Kayato looked at Proto. He was far paler than they ever seen him. His eyes weary with black spots under them. You could tell he was sweating from his hair frizzed up in some spots. He had a white buttoned up shirt on that revealed part of his discolored and swollen chest. He’s hardly been able to leave the house or sit outside.
“You’re right.” Ace sighed. He used himself as a crutch for Proto and laid him down on the bed. The bed was tossed again. Proto was having a hard time getting sleep if he ever could. Ace sighed. It wasn’t good that he didn’t get use to the house before he got sick. If Proto hadn’t had been so stubborn and hide his little secret he would’ve done something earlier, “We’re going to pick up his friend with Shiria so don’t get up.”
“Whatever.” Proto rolled over to face the wall.
“Kayato go get the food please.” Ace asked.
“Yeah. Okay.” Kayato was unsure about leaving them alone. He managed to leave them anyways.
“You shouldn’t be putting a strain on yourself. You only hurting yourself.” Ace said. Proto turned.
“Shouldn’t you be leaving?” He asked sarcastically. His eyes annoyed. He was a fighter but that wasn’t going to save him. Ace’s caring smile dropped into a frown. Bam! He smacked his brother’s face.
“How dare you do this to the kids and us.” Ace started to choke up. A tear started to fall down his cheek, “You lied over your own potential. You could’ve killed yourself and the kids. Is that all you want to do Proto? Hurt others who care about you?”
“Don’t you call me-”
“Think about others!”
“Uh…” Kayato stood at the door. He had the food Shiria had made for him.
“Just set it on the desk by his bed.” Ace stormed out the bedroom.
“Are you okay Proto?” Kayato asked doing what he was told.
“Don’t worry you can yell at me too if you want. I won’t hold it against you.” Proto sighed. Kayato just walked out the room. He wanted to yell at him. Ask him why? Why did he lie to them about him being sick. They knew he didn’t have much time left. Maybe the rest of the year if they were lucky. Tadashi told them how useless it would be to try and operate from how far it had already exceeded in attacking Proto’s system. He remembered the signs of how Tadashi explained what the rest of the year or however long he had left would be for him:
First he’d start to get insomnia,
Next he’ll get dizzy spells,
He’ll start coughing up blood and having uncontrollable series of throwing up,
Next he’ll have to start using an oxygen tank to breathe,
After that his end up losing most of his mobility,
He won’t be able to speak,
And finally he’ll end up in a comma or having his heart stop.
They said after that either way he’d end up dying. Kayato prayed Proto could go into a comma then having to go through the pain of his heart stopping. He already knew Proto died once before from a weak heart and now it’s come back being attacked from Virus Metal. Tadashi explained it was when a person gains too much fluid like metal from a virus. You could get it from being scratched or at least beaten badly from one.
Tadashi thought it was whenever Proto protected them from the viruses when they accidentally teleported with him he ended up getting the horrible illness. Kayato got to the living room and looked at Shiria. She hadn’t spoken one word to Proto ever since they found out let alone look at him. She was so upset. Maybe she wasn’t too happy that he would hide it from her. He had already told her so much compared to him. He only found out a lot about Proto recently. He didn’t blame Proto for his secrecy he had every right to keep to himself or trust whoever he did.
“How is he?” She asked.
“He’s fine.” Kayato answered vaguely.
“Alright let’s go.” Ace grabbed his keys. It seemed like everyone had a bone to pick with Proto. They pulled up to the house. A girl in a purple hoodie and orange undershirt stood there. She had long black hair. Her eyes were blue though. She had on some purple cargos on and a skateboard to match hanging out her small carry around backpack that was black. She was Kayato’s age and opened the door to the car.
“Nice ride.” She said looking in it.
“Thanks.” Ace smiled.
“This is Yuki my friend.” Kayato introduced.
“She’s pretty.” Ace complimented.
“Thank you.” She buckled in, “So you’re Shiria then?”
“Yes.”
“It’s nice to met you.”
“It’s nice to met you too.”
“Maybe you two can have a sleepover.” Ace replied.
“Really?” Shiria smiled.
“Yeah.” Ace started the car up.
“And you’re Proto right?” Yuki asked.
“Oh no I’m Ace.” He replied.
“Oh sorry.”
“It’s alright.”
Proto waited a while and sighed. He ate only a little of his food. He didn’t need to eat too much or he would make himself sick. He sat the plate down and laid down. He heard the door open to the house and ignored it. He saw through the crack in his door walk by as Kayato showed her around. He heard Ace and Shiria talking but didn’t bother listening. He knew Shiria was mad at him. He didn’t mind. He never should’ve gotten too attached anyway.
He got up and to the bathroom. he splashed some water on himself. Then looked up. He looked horrible. If anything he probably would reach stage three in a few days. He had already gotten dizzy several times. He unbuttoned his shirt and looked at his chest. He sighed. Then walked back to his bed when another dizzy spell hit him. He stumbled out the door to his room and hit the floor.
“Proto!” Kayato yelled. He bent over his friend next to him.
“Urgh.” Proto moaned. He struggled to sit up.
“What’s the matter with him?” Yuki asked.
“He’s sick.” Kayato looked around, “And there isn’t much that we can do for him.”
“What’s going on?” Ace ran over. He stopped and looked Proto, “Proto what are you doing out of bed?”
“Shut up Ace I’m fine.” Proto grumbled. He stood up with little to none help. He looked at the girl for a moment then went back to his room.
“Hey wait do I know you?” Yuki asked.
“Don’t think so.” Proto turned around and leaned against the door. Yuki looked at him funny.
“It’s just I think you look familiar.” Yuki thought hard.
“Don’t think so.” Proto said, “I don’t even have a face like that it’s not like you see too many cat ears and tails.”
“Alright Proto get to bed.” Ace ordered. Proto shrugged and left.
“Dammit!” Proto yelled with a thud.
“What happened?” Ace asked.
“Damn eyes burn what do you think?” Proto cursed.
“Sorry about him.” Ace sighed.
“It’s okay. I think my dad might be able to help him. He’s a scientist.” Yuki looked up.
“Oh right you might want to call him and see if you can spend the night.” Ace held out his phone. She started to type in the number.
“You have his phone number in here.” Yuki looked up.
“I do?”
“Yeah.”
“What’s his name? I only have one scientist in there.”
“Tadashi.” Yuki looked up.
“What!” Everyone yelled.
