Description

...Yeah, we're doing something a bit different. This is a french cartoon that happened to air on Cartoon Network in the Us. I am indeed covering the dub, but I hear it's faithful enough due to being done by the same company. I heard about this one so I figured why not look at?

Our first season is a bit of a mixed bag. For one, it drops you into it without explaining anything. You can gather what it's about over time but it takes a bit. I just looked it up to save myself trouble. There is a prequel ep, but it';s a bit later. Not sure if they made it later or it wasn't aired until later. It's written like you're supposed to know what's going on, so idk.

Taking that aside, the show can be rather formulaic. With doesn't always work for this a plot driven show like this. There's typically a normal conflict going on the real world, and the bad guy doing bad guy stuff that makes them have to go to Lyoko, and in msot of the decent eps (and the meh one) the main plot is not interesting and since the rest is the same as usual, it can't make up for it.

Actually, that meh is surprisingly kind of bad. Like with the amazing rating, I didn't want to put a higher rating until I saw the rest of the show since I could get worse. I'll explain further some other time. Thankfully in the 2nd half they do try to do more unique plot lines.

In general, the plot is good and all the stuff with having to get Aelita out is interesting. Although the finale was a tad cop out ish. No spoilers but there's some classic status qou stuff going on there. When the show focuses more on telling a story and so on, it's pretty solid and even a bit intense sometimes.

There's plenty of potential for a very good show, it just needs to break out of the formula. I hear it does, so I'm looking forward to the next season.

MISC NOTES:

Being a dub, the acting ranges from fine to wonky, and it takes getting used to. Not too bad though.

As you know, the normal world is in 2d animation, while Lyoko is CG. For 2003, it looks fine. Nothing crazy special, but for what they are going for, it's passable enough.

Man, these guys hate Sissi, the alpha bitch. It gets a bit tiring but sometimes shes' bitchy enough to make it work. Naturally, one ep has her being fine and returns to normal in the next episode.

Yes, the theme is awesome despite some cheesy lyrics

So yeah, a bit mixed but is mostly fine, and can be great. We'll see how it goes. (And yeah I know of Code Lyoko Evolution, I'll do that since it's not just 26 eps). See you for Season 2.

UPDATE: Changed it to mediocre, like i said.
